Like I said Tim was well schooled from the Philadelphia gyms. Anyone who knows anything about boxing knows the best fighters in the world come from the mid-west USA. When you face a guy from philly you better be ready. His trainer Slim Jim Robinson was one of the old school teachers.
How can you say Holmes would beat Fury? He's proven everything there is to prove and it is completely unfair to say that someone beats him, he's stronger, bigger, harder puncher, just as fast and possibly more clever
It’s clear you have not much of Holmes who fought and beat a much higher level of competition than my man Tyson has faced. Fury is neither faster, stronger and more clever in the ring than Big Jack. I say this as someone who likes Fury a lot.
Holmes fought in a bad era no doubt and you are correct in your assessment of Holmes's resume to some degree. Fury's 2 best wins. Wlad was old, Wilder limited. Those are the facts! Instead of calling me names, prove me wrong. Are there 2 other wins on Fury's resume that surpass Wlad and Wilder? A simple yes or no response will do.
Holmes is as much a defensive wizard as fury is an offensive master. Being able to catch the least skilled heavyweight belt holder possibly in hw history is not the same as a legit atg hw. Fury was getting pizza faced by a frickin nobody.
He was still a fifteen fight amateur and should never have run Holmes so close unless he was to turn out some sort of heavyweight phenom, which he wasn't. He was basically able to walk Holmes down with a simple cross arm defence and some minimal head movement. What else was he doing that was so worthy of study?
Holmes has always done this. Whenever a HW starts getting a lot of acclaim or has reached a milestone or near to his ego can't handle it. He did it with Tyson, Foreman, Lewis and Wlad. If anything, when Larry starts taking swipes at a fighter it's a tacit acknowledgment that they're really good.
And Holmes was getting knocked down and put on bandy legs by all manner of mediocre and green opponents. Holmes might have been able to do a good Ali impersonation but he was not Ali. His punch evasion was frequently poor, he was a sucker for stiff jabs and overhand rights, and he was lazy against defending the body as well. All those shots Fury does well. Excluding injuries Fury would read him in short order and start unloading shots on Holmes's grill that Larry would not expect or be able to brace for. Larry in turn would be falling short with his own shots as he tries to react to Fury's movements and getting befuddled by feints and changes of angle. Anyone expecting this to be some sort of high level chess match between two master boxers would be shocked at how quickly Fury was able to take control of Holmes.
Dummy, Fury is still fighting. He is building his resume. "Old" Wlad was head and shoulders above Norton, Wilder, fraud that he is, would be one of Holme's better defenses, and Wallin, Chisora, Cunningham, and Hammer are all equal to some of Holme's shittier ones. It isn't that "Homes fought in a bad era." There was a lot of talent in that era. The issue is that Holmes chose not to fight it. It was a bad era because a mediocre, unambitious champ was at top.
Wlad was old and Wilder is limited. Your hero's best wins. Not too impressive. Shitting on Holmes and all other HW champs that came before Fury doesn't change the facts. You talk up Fury like he's so special, yet his resume doesn't support the accolades. You critisize Holmes for not fight the best, yet come up with excuse for Fury. Fury beat Wlad then held up the division for almost 3 years, ducking the rematch. Came back and has fought less than stellar opposition. Especially when Wilder is considered his best opponent since his return and you want people to praise Fury as if he's God's gift to the sport? LOL Fury has a lot of work to do before he is placed in the upper echelon of the sport historically. Not saying he can't do it, but I will wait and see how his career turns out before I rate him that high.
Tim could really fight which is a well known fact in boxing circles know as as a sleek gifted skills star. I disagree with you about Terrible Tim the lad was quality.
I think Mike’s Tyson’s assessment includes on Big Larry Holmes was telling. After Tyson knocked him out when Larry asks him how he would have done against Larry in his prime Tyson says Holmes is a legendary fighter that had they fought in Holmes prime he Tyson would not have stood a chance. Says it all really. Larry might come across salty but we cannot doubt his quality. If he calls the modern era amateurs he probably has a point to say that this guys are becoming champions yet have not really learned their trade.
I didn't say he couldn't fight, but a man of Holmes's experience should have never been pushed to the brink like that by a Witherspoon at that stage of his career. Anyway, you said there are things Tim could teach modern heavyweights from that performance. Like what?
Tyson was, and always has been, a lot more respectful of other fighters than Holmes ever was. My opinion is that any version of Holmes gets merced by that version of Tyson. Maybe not as quick, but it's happening. As for Holmes' comments on this current breed, what specifically does he consider amateurish about them? The fact they can't take a punch? Fury and Joshua both took right hands from hell and got up to win their bouts (draw my ass). Is that what he means? Holmes also got knocked down by right hands from Shavers and Snipes, and got put on wobbly legs by Mike Weaver. Is he an amateur then? They can't fight? They never learned how to fight? So how the hell are they winning fights then? Or can no one else fight either including Olympic gold medallists like Povetkin and Wlad? Holmes's comments are the typical spiteful generic old school BS that we're expected to take because it comes from a champion and a legend. Eff that. If he's got so much experience and boxing understanding then he should be able to break down what precisely is wrong with the current generation a lot more convincingly than they can't fight and they're all amateurs. I expect if you pressed him to go into detail he wouldn't have a clue how to respond constructively. How about you? What's your take?
