Larry Holmes destroys Muhammad Ali

Yes I cannot believe some of what I am reading here.

Ali never passed a physical after Manilla. Ali could not complete the basic tasks as described in this thread. He had Parkinson's & was diagnosed with brian damage BEFORE the Shavers fight. Then there were the thyroid/diet pills to further zombie-fry him.

It is not remotely burnishing a legend to show that Ali was a ghot of a shell of himself. It takes nothing away from Holmes, but of course he was far more shot than Holmes vs. Tyson, & you cannot draw conclusions just on that fight either.

So Ali demonstrating defensive skills on camera a few short YEARS before the fight shows that he was competent or anything like the fighter he was when great? :shock: Now I have heard everthing.

He lost Spinks due to laziness, then trained his ass off for the rematch & won, though much reduced from even a couple years ago. He trained very hard for Holmes but was shot, AND shot with the thyroid pills which embalmed his responses.

Ali was great somewhat younger than Holmes, starting from Gold in Rome. He had a zillion amatuer fights, suffered a 3 1/2 year exile, & fought the best overall competition, most AFTER his peak. He had Parkinson's during his reign.

Ali had significantly more speed, espeically of foot, creativity & great heart. I am sure Holmes sometimes took it easy, at least on an aging champ, at least because his job was to prepare the champ for bouts, & any fighter, Holmes, Tyson, whoever, might be debilitated from peak by constant training wars.

 

Holmes doesn't get enough credit for the victory. Ali, as always, gets a pass on his performance. To Ali fans, the man never lost a fight...all his losses are justified. Holmes beat the **** out of him, and in Ali's prime it would have been closer...but I'd still take Larry.

 

huh? No Vince, Ali lost fights. I am wondering though about the guy who recently said on another thread that Ali beat Frazier all 3 times.

Yet the vast majority of fans of all stripes acknowledge his losses. I recall beinge xcited about the fight as a kid. It depends what you mean by "justified". But even absent the thyroid pills Ali was a sick man.

Now I would have peak Tyson over peak Holmes. But likewise, the actual fight he took on 3 years notice when 3 years retired is not a kock against him. Tyson at 38 meant little too, but that more due to his own lack of efforts.

There is plenty to give Holmes credit for, but beating a drug addled washed up Parkinson's Ali is not one of them. Which of course isnot his fault, but it is just not rational to moan Ali is getting a pass here.

 

tons of fighters would have kicked the ass of 1980 larry holmes... lennox lewis, mike tyson, joe louis, george foreman 73-74, joe frazier 70,rocky marciano, wladimir klitschko, vitali klitschko 2003, riddick bowe 92 and probabvly evander holyfield 90-91 would give him the hell

 

of course ali 64-67 would have humiliated him and larry would look stupid and ponderous.
larry holmes fought wars vs average fighters like tim whiterspoon , or a past prime version of ken norton, he would lose badly vs several all time greats

The jab is the most important punch in boxing and Larry Holmes had one of the best.

Tyson beat the living **** out of Holmes even more convincingly, maybe Holmes fans need to stop giving Holmes passes for his losses too then.

 

you are not winning great figts just because you have a jab, holmes is very beatable, he is overrated h2h, he never was dominant against capable strong fighters, not like ali, tyson,foreman,louis..were.. And yes every guy that i mentioned would have kicked the ass of holmes. Louis would have knocked him out cold, and foreman would catch him with a right hand in some point and he would finish holmes, he was no crappy finisher like shavers, marciano would destroy his ribs and would make pressure all the fight, holmes could not keep rocky off him. Vitali and wladimir would have everything to beat holmes... Size, power, skill... And holmes did not have the power to stop them with a lucky punch, the same thing with lewis.
HOLMES COULD NOT EVEN STOP GUYS LIKE SMITH, BERBICK, SPOON.. ALI WOULD HAVE NOT PROBLEM STOPING THESE GUYS IN HIS PRIME

 

ali was past his prime and still he did beat norton once at least, and ken was in his peak, larry wa sin his peak and ken was past his prime, great difference stupid troll

 

Nobody beats a prime Harry Lolmes :blurp, except Ali and Tyson.

 

go and watch the fight spoon vs holmes and then try to tell me that he would have beaten riddick bowe in his peak.. holmes would get stopped...he would trade with bowe and riddick was easy to hit but larry was no puncher, evander did hit harder than holmes and was better combination puncher. bowe 92 would give holmes a lot of damage, a complete beating
