CIANI: Earlier Jenna spoke about your anniversary, your fights with Spinks. I’m wondering if you could tell us a little bit about your fight with Mike Tyson and generally what your thoughts were on Tyson as a champion following you?

HOLMES: Well first of all let me just say this, when I fought Mike Tyson I didn’t fight Mike Tyson. I wasn’t even ready. I was two years off for Mike Tyson. I wasn’t out there training. I was singing and hanging out. I wasn’t really into fighting Mike Tyson. I had quit. Don King came to me and offered me $3.5 million. I said I might as well take the fight. I took the fight on short notice. They only gave me two months to get ready for the fight and then I fell short. Mike Tyson beat me, and after that I quit and went back to the things I was doing with the band and whatever. Then I told people how it was. Mike Tyson is going to be a great fighter but his mind is not going to be there to be a great fighter because he’s going to do anything and everything that he wants to do. I told people in five years or whatever he would be in jail, and everything I predicted and said about Mike Tyson came true. I mean I like Mike Tyson. I think he’s a good guy. I just think he needs to think about what he’s going to do before he does it.

CIANI: Now Larry, we recently had Buster Douglas on the program here for an interview. What were your thoughts at the time when Buster beat Tyson and were you surprised by the results in that fight?

HOLMES: No, I wasn’t surprised because Buster Douglas is a boxer. He used his jab and stayed on the outside. Mike Tyson never adjusted. He never fought anybody who was going to hit him back and when Buster Douglas hit him back I wasn’t surprised. Everybody else was.

Thanks for posting. I've heard Larry say these things before to Bert Sugar. I believe him, but it was obvious to everyone that Tyson was beginning to spiral out of control beginning in 1988. So many other people can go on record saying the same things. But, I don't think anyone expected Buster Douglas to be the man to give him his first loss.

I know its such a knee jerk reaction to say this but him saying that just comes off as excuses and bitterness cause he lost to Mike.

I think this has all been proven to be untrue, Holmes was shown interviewed months and months before the Tyson fight talking about how he wanted the Tyson fight.

All the 'I predicted all this would happen' is probably more BS Bitter Larry, especially the 'I wasn't suprised Buster Douglas beat him', well maybe Larry was hoping and praying every man Tyson fought would beat him after he lost himself.

I remember seeing an interview with Larry where he crapped on about how Ali was "only" 38 when he beat him where as Larry was still kickin arse at 50 which I think he was using as an example of why he was much the better fighter than Ali,in his mind.

How old was Larry and how long was his layoff before he met Tyson?

Exactly the ****ing same as Ali before he met him (not to mention Ali already having Parkinson's and way,way more ring wear as well).

    Talk about a selective memory.

    My favorite part

Why does Larry **** on Lewis in particular (Besides every other fighter).

Larry's got about 1000 excuses for every loss he has had.

Compared to Holmes jab then no Lewis doesn't have a jab, Larry has the best HW jab ever.

Oh don't forget Lewis also doesn't have any stamina according to Larry, and Ali can't have been that good because he lost to someone as mediocre as Frazier

No Lewis doesn't get special treatment :D

I like Larry Holmes. I don't think he's bitter these days at all - he just says it how he sees it. Most people here whine about him because he brings up stuff about your favourite fighters.

And, NO, it wasn't obvious to many in January 1988 that Tyson was going to go off the rails.
Things didn't start to publicly unravel until Jim Jacobs died a couple of months later, and more severely after the Spinks fights.
Holmes was the first man I ever heard predict Tyson was going to jail etc.

To most people at that time, Tyson was still on his way to being the corporate role model commercial superstar athlete for the 1990s. Or at the least the world heavyweight champion for another 10 years.

Why is he a dick for simply having confidence in his own peak ability ?
He's paid his dues and he reckons in his prime he'd be confident to beat anyone ever. Good for him.

Cassius Clay was declaring himself "the greatest of all time" before he'd even won the championship. And people love all that. Even David Haye doesn't go that far in self-promoting beyond his actual achievements.

Holmes has one of the finest records of any champion. He has a right to say he was the best ever.
