Larry Holmes was hospitalized Friday for treatment of diabetes.

The 66-year-old Holmes, who was heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 1978 to 1985, has battled diabetes since a diagnosis for Type II diabetes in 2013.

He went to the hospital Friday with elevated blood sugar levels and was admitted overnight, said his wife Diane Holmes.

"He's up and around," she said Saturday. "They've kept him there for monitoring."

Holmes' struggle with diabetes was the subject of a documentary released in April by Emmy Award-winning ASR Media Productions and St. Luke's University Health Network.

A premiere screening of the film, "Sweat Effect: Larry Holmes' Biggest Fight," was held at SteelStacks in Bethlehem and has aired on Channel 69 WFMZ-TV.

Holmes complained of dizziness Friday and went to the hospital on doctors' recommendation, Diane Holmes said.

He expects to be released Saturday or Sunday, as soon as his blood sugar reaches a certain level, she said.

Diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States, with Type 2 being the most common, affecting about 27 million Americans.

Holmes has spoken openly about his diabetes and acknowledged temptations with his diet.

Holmes owns a 69-6 career record, with 44 knockouts. He was 52 when he fought his last fight in 2002.

In December, a bronze statue memorializing Holmes' career and community contributions was dedicated at Scott Park in Easton.

I spoke to him earlier today. He's out of the hospital and doing fine. Checking into the hospital was just a precautionary move.

Boy, but do I relate to you champ! I have diabetes and it's a huge hurdle, with many changes that to have to make regarding diet, taking your medicine and taking the damned disease seriously, like Larry is doing, because it can disfigure you as well as kill you. I can't believe that 900+ blood glucose reading he had...the highest I've ever had was 465. So glad he's getting it dealt with.
