just watching a show on espn classic (uk) and holmes is saying some wild stuff: "gerry cooney would have been a great if it weren't for me, if he'd been in the ring with any other fighter than me, he'd have been world heavyweight champion" "people say all of this stuff about muhammad ali not being himself for that fight - they only said that after i beat him! i didn't get no credit for that fight!" paraphrased.
Some fighters have boring personalites outside the ring. Others are charasmatic inside the ring and out. Larry Holmes is certainly the latter. His ego to me is as fun to watch as his left jab. He called George Foreman a "big fat phoney" a few years back. In 2005, when asked about George winning the title again in 1994, Larry said "Let me tell ya--even a blind squirrel finds an accorn every now and then." I've discovered that whenever someone mentions George Foreman in Larry's presence, he can't help but call out "the fat man."
Holmes can be an *******. Thats for sure. Put it this way: They let basically every joker in captivity into the hall of fame weekend and Holmes managed to get kicked out. Now I know there are two sides to this story, and I partly agree with Holmes side but there ya have it.
He loves to talk crap about fighters. He never mentions the fighters he ducked, but he loves to talk about Foreman not fighting him. With Holmes it's a one-way street; never any oncoming traffic. Definitely an egomaniac with some hypocrisy and sour grapes thrown in.
must admit i think cooney would of beat dokes or weaver so if cooney had challenged for the WBA belt he may well of won a version of the tittle
I don't see why Lewis was an egomaniac, I haven't heard him come out with arrogant obnoxiously unrealistic statements, but then again he did get the TKO6 :yep
This. Every truly great fighter I've ever seen talk comes across as an egomaniac...except for Alexis...but he was one of a kind.
Holmes is way off the mark with the Cooney reference ! Sorry,I just feel that Gerry was one of the most overrated heavyweight contenders ever. He had potential but was brought along in totally the wrong way,for the sake of short term big bucks. I just knew that his fight with Holmes was going to be one sided. Page,Tubbs,Dokes and even Weaver would have beaten him, imo.
That egomania was planted in Larry's little pea head because of the public's resentment of him obliterating the beloved Muhammad Ali..the same resentment that Ezzard Charles had to deal with.
Difference being Ezzard Charles was a great fighter and a great man Larry Holmes was a great fighter but pretty damn far from being a great man
