Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who'll be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame this weekend, takes his best shots:
On Lennox Lewis: "If he would've got in the ring with me I would've tore his ass up. Lennox Lewis doesn't have heart. He jabbed half-assed, and they say he got a good jab."
On today's heavyweights: "They're fat and out of shape. That's why (Evander) Holyfield doesn't want to quit, because these guys can't fight."
On boxing then vs. now: "Boxing was better then as far as fights. Now guys are making more money and can't fight. I have a lot of respect for (Floyd) Mayweather, but he's the kind of guy I wouldn't want my fighter to be like."
On his former promoter, Don King: "We have a love-hate relationship. He'll call me when he needs me, but when he don't he won't call. But when he calls me he has to pay me."

On Ali, who hired him as a sparring partner for four years: "When I beat him they said he was old at 38. I fought until I was 52 and winning. Ali made the fights hard because he wasn't that (expletive) good of a fighter. He made an easy fight a hard fight because he didn't have the power and he stood there and wanted to prove to people he could take punches. He made Joe Frazier a hard fight by not training like he should've. Ali was a good fighter, but he talked (expletive) and made everybody think he was a good fighter. I used to kick his ass all the time in the gym when I was learning."

I'm so sick of his **** in this regard. He's always telling people what he would have done to past greats. The only guy he apparenlty admitted he would struggle with was Liston, and I didn't see that for myself.

Just when you think Larry has mellowed a bit he comes out and shows us he's still the same loud mouthed wanker as always.

Holmes is a ***** and it makes him sad and angry that he will never earn the respect that Ali,Lewis and others earned.
Holmes was good but Ali was great,as a man and as a champion.

Yea, at that dinner thing, he said the only one that would give him trouble was Johnson.

In honesty, the man is one of the very highest tier of HWs ever, but some respect would be nice for others, arsehole at times, most of the time

What I've noticed is, he's an ass when the media is around, but when they're not he's a very nice guy and very mellow and down to Earth. Funny how the reporters or cameras can change a person.

It's a shame, and a total vicious circle.
Holmes lets himself down and it feeds itself...

Larry's rants should be treasured because, if read between the lines, they offer unique insights from one of the grand masters, which is more than we usually get in so much politically correct bull.

Of course, Larry's considerable ego must be factored in, ("I woulda torn Muhammad up!!!"), but to me the man has earned his stripes. I wish more public figures would tell it like they really see it. I learn nothing from Foreman's pandering praise of everyone under the sun.

One thing he never takes into account in glorifying his sparring matches against his employer Ali is that was not the best Ali, not to mention that what was life-and-death for his youthful self was practice for his world champion boss. In a fight, pre-exile Ali would have made him look quite foolish, so he should measure his decibel level.

And it is ridiculous to say Lennox Lewis had no heart.

But at least with Larry it is a welcome "what you see is what you get".

Holmes is still a bitter jerk after all these years! haha.......I'm sure he's a cool guy for the most part, but he still has that problem controlling his mouth; obviously his foot still fits nicely between his pearly whites!

What gets me is how Holmes acts like he just cleaned out the heavyweight division during his prime and unified the titles and beat back all comers.....But the plain truth is he didn't. But he talks like he did.....Holmes was a very good fighter, but he had his share of controversies, scandals, and more than a few talented fighters that he elected not to fight. But then he has the nerve to criticize Lennox Lewis, a guy who, unlike Holmes, managed to regain the heavyweight championship and fight all of the high-profile opponents that the public wanted to see him against. And a case can be made that lewis fought the better oponents. But Holmes is still Holmes!

And he's highly jealous of George Foreman and his grill! hahaha

In Hauser's biography on Ali there's a story on how Holmes bragged to a paper that he was in fact the better fighter. Ali heard about it and gave Holmes a solid spanking when they sparred the next time.
