    They were, yes.

I think I'd rather have him treat me like **** from afar than face to face Holmes style for years.

And get unpaid on top of it.

At least Frazier became a rich man.

Atlas would say that seeing as George completely got inside his and Moorer's heads before they fought in 94.

Yeah, so? He said Foreman was smart that way. But Atlas is another guy who says it how he sees it, no sugar coating or pleasing the masses.

This crap coming from a guy who barely beat a well past his prime Ken Norton when he (Holmes) was peaking, and later lost to Michael Spinks when he (Hlomes) was about as good as the 78' version of Norton. How many prime ATG fighters did you beat Larry? ............................. I'll give you credit though, that shot from Shavers would have KO's most but you got up from that. That is a great accomplishment

I know people want fighters to be nice and humble out of the ring and also in retirement, but the fact is you always get the outspoken characters and Holmes is one of those - at least his public persona is; perhaps in private it is a different story.
I agree with what Prime said, in that at least Holmes genuinely believes what he says and doesn't talk **** just to please.
    And why should he?
He stands up and is counted on what he says, he says it knowing that it'll be printed and read by thousands of people.

Personally I like Larry. I've never met him or anything, but I do believe the media selectively print what people want to read, and what people want to read are contraversial statements because it gets tongues wagging.

I also think that most of the time his claims are not totally baseless. There is definitely an element of truth to all of it.

As for the jockstrap remark - let's be honest, the man is human. He wanted to break the record because maybe that finally would get him out of Ali's shadow. He was angry and frustrated and said something silly in the heat of the moment. However, it didn't help matters when it became crystal clear that the Marciano family didn't want Holmes to break the record. I've heard of stories where they were praying (literally) that Rocky's record remained intact.
    Not very sporting, is it?
I wonder how much of a part race played a part in that as well...not to dig up a can of worms, but it needs to be said.

Considering the fervor that was whipped up when Valuev neared the 49-0, I think it's fair to say anyone getting to that point ruffles the feathers of certain boxing purists.

I don't doubt some racially-motivated hatred towards Larry over the years but not for the 49-0 I don't think.

And I don't think there is an element of truth in all Larry says. Like everyone else he can say stupid baseless things just because he doesn't like someone or something. Jack Johnson used to berate the hell out of Joe Louis for seemingly little reason too.

Good for Teddy and the very fact that he and Larry say it how they see it (whether it's right or wrong) is why they **** a lot of people off.

Perception is everything and it doesn't matter how nice you say Larry is or how good he treats his missus most boxing followers think he's a classless,loud-mouthed,***** and going by what he says how can we think otherwise?

There's a saying that you don't **** on monuments and each time Larry disparages an Ali or Marciano he does just that.

There's no surer way to gain unpopularity and with that a lack of appreciation of his own (considerable) achievements.Which is a shame as he was a superb fighter.

But he's just not a likeable personality and for those of us who don't know him personally it's hard to have any sympathy for him.

Holmes is and always was a mean SOAB. He grew up in extreme poverty. He's just shouting his mouth off, nothing more...

Maybe in his prime he could have taken Ali. I think it's possible.

I was under the impression that Holmes was married before when very young. I might be wrong though.

I definitely think Lewis compares to past champions. I think he would have beaten Holmes if they met when they were both in their prime, but of course it could go the other way as well. I think Ali and Lewis both were quite outstanding champions. They didn't really duck anyone and had no such thing as a coulour line to hide behind.

As many has already stated, Holmes himself was a great champion, but he just degrades himself by talking trash like that.

Holmes would not completely run away from Foreman like Young.
Foreman beats Holmes in any era. George doesn't care. Holmes does.
Ali of "The Rumble" beats Holmes. Frazier beats Holmes. As we know,
Norton almost did. Holmes thinks he was superior to all of them. FALSE. I see Holmes of '80 beating Lewis, Bowe, and Holyfield.

I do understand that yes, but people take someone like Tyson's comments and say it is funny and like him more. If Holmes said that things Tyson said, he would be completely shunned by the boxing world. The media picks and chooses and makes and breaks fighters. They did their very best, and then some to break Larry, but he wouldn't let them. They boosted guys like Ali and Leonard up, I just wonder how they would respond to the usual dumb media questions had they been put down and insulted all throughout their careers.

Larry had a torn bicep muscle in the Norton fight, and the Holmes of 85 and 86 wasn't near as good as the Norton of 78. The Norton of the Holmes fight was barely worse than the Norton of the Ali fights. You'd never guess he was 34 if you didn't know his age going into that fight.

Easton gives a crap. A lot of people care for the guy, if Mike Tyson was found shot dead in an alleyway, no one would be surprised.
