As much flack and critisicm Larry Holmes has recieved, unjust due..his overall competition isn't as bad as everyone made it out to be.. TRUE he fought alot of bums in title defenses racked up (but so did other great champions Louis, Ali, etc..) TRUE he never fought Frazier/Foreman, but those guys were out of the picture in 1977, and when Holmes was champion.. his resume includes a great assortment of the BEST and diverse skill-level heavyweights spanning 3-4 decades.. Holmes fought: Michael Spinks (twice) Earnie Shavers (twice) Mike Tyson Ken Norton Tim Witherspoon Gerry Cooney Ray Mercer Mike Weaver (twice) Muhammad Ali Leon Spinks Roy Williams Evander Holyfield Bonecrusher that's a pretty darn good list of opposition.. probably only 2nd to Ali's level of competion (1964-1981).. Holmes was a fighting champion (defended his title 4-5 times a year!!)and he was one of the masters.. still somewhat underrated.. He fought Holyfield and Tyson absolutely way PAST his prime as well..
Well if you actually narrow the list down to the guys he fought during his title reign it would look alot damn worse.
I disagree , there absolutely no way you can dis Holems resume . No heavy weight after him, has had a better resume ..
:rofl His wins resume most certainly isn't. Filter out who he fought during his title reign, and it definitely wasn't. In fact, Holmes level of competition got ripped much in the same way Wlad's does today. Doesn't mean he wasn't a hell of a fighter of course, but Holmes took a little more time to get thought of as highly as he is now because people didn't think too much of who he beat at the time. Besides, most people have him at least top 5 at HW (I've never seen him out of the top 10), so I don't think he's really underrated, either.
Unfortunately for Larry Homes he fought in the shadow of Ali/Frazier/Foreman. He also had the misfortune of having his prime years during a fairly weak era. Head to head he is top 5 all time. Visit the classic forum and you'll see I'm not the only one who thinks that way.
I would take at least 5 resumes since Holmes over his pathetic reign. And when he did have a legit fighter, he either wouldn't fight him or not grant a rematch that was deserved. Then he lost twice to a light heavyweight.
larry was a good fighter and despite his crude remarks to marciano, which hurt him in the boxing world, he is still and ATG heavy. 20 defenses of the title. second to joe louis. cant take it away from him
Who cares whom he fought? Calvin Jones fought against Vitali Klitschko, Ike Ibeabuchi, Shannon Briggs, Henry Akinwande, David Tua, Andrew Golota, Francois Botha, Lennox Lewis and Tony Tucker. Is Calvin Jones good? Why not? BECAUSE HE MISERABLY PERFORMED AGAINST THESE OPPONENTS. How can you list Mike Tyson in the Holmes resumee, when he LOST against Tyson? From the list above Holmes lost against Tyson, Spinks, Holyfield. What are they doing on that list? He lost also against Oliver McCall and Brian Nielson by the way. From the list above he couldn't KO Ray Mercer and Roy Williams. Mike Weaver and Bonecrusher Smith are chinachins and featherfists with a bummy record. What are they doing in that resumee? From the list above Holmes had a SD against Ken Norton and Tim Witherspoon. Not a stellar achievement. He fought Muhammad Ali when Ali was completely shot and shouldn't have been allowed to fight with Parkinson in the ring. And even then it took him 10 rounds. So his resumee actually reads like this: He lost against good fighters, had problems against good and problems against bad fighters and won against bums. In other words: Larry Holmes is overrated.
Just shows you how terrible the division was then. Heavyweight title of the world against guys like 19-8 (weaver), 13-0 (Ocasio), 26-8 (Ledoux), 10-2 (Leon! Spinks), 14-1 (Smith). Oh my god. Oh man, and some are complaining about Wladimir Klitschko vs 31-1 (Thompson).
IMO you have to count all of his opposition because other than vs Tyson, he was competitive with all of the mentioned fighters even if he was in his 40s. the fact that he did all right into his 40s shows what kind of fighter he was. even his prime comp (up to 84 or so) is underrated imo
