In all fairness to Holmes, regarding a rematch with Norton,Ken met Earnie Shavers in a title eliminator,on the same bill as Holmes' defense against Ossie Ocasio, and lost. Therefore Shavers got the title fight.

Nice list, never the less, his record and title defenses are still to me quite impressive, yet I think if he would have took some of these challengers on he would have been received a bit more well by the masses.

If you want to see what a really masterful BOXER Holmes was watch the Cooney fight. I have both the HBO (Tompkins and SRL) and ABC (Cosell) versions on DVD.

Holmes used movement he circled to Cooney's right used the Jab and the occasional right hand would parry Cooney's punches tie him up and wash rinse and repeat until he got Cooney "drunk" then he "mugged" him just like he said he would.

Cooney only landed maybe one or two meaningful punches the whole fight. Sure, Holmes era was not the best but the guy was a damn good prize fighter.

I also read that Ali was stopped in the ams. How I wish to watch it too.

The whole WBA merry go round was self explanitory. rather than each champion losing to a beter guy they just lost to the previous guys chalenger...until another TKO victim of Larry holmes won the belt.

Mike weaver was beat fair and square by holmes which puts him and the entire WBA thing into perspective.

Weaver got another chance against tate, a fighter who wound up with a WBA title from beating coetzee who KOd leon spinks who would not face norton - who holmes beat.

when weaver beat tate all this proved was that he was still behind holmes. Then weaver also beat coetzee (who had been beaten by tate) so still at this point he is still behind holmes. When weaver lost to dokes (who talented though dynamite dokes was didnt beat too many rated fighters himself) the new champ wound up losing to coetzee who previously lost to weaver after losing to tate initialy. It was a dead end. No progress was made.

The next wave of the WBA journey was no beter, It featured Greg Page KO coetzee but he already lost to witherspoon who was coming off a Holmes loss. Then in a run of 2 fights where the winner was as bad as the loser the belt passed from Page to tubbs to witherspoon. Then along came another Larry Holmes's TKO victim bonecrusher smith, who flatened terible tim. Two sucsesive WBA champions being losers to HOLMES.

People who knock holmes would like the rest of the world to believe that the best contenders were tied up to alternative belts and Holmes got away without fighting them but its not the truth. Almost from the start of his run as a champion to the end of his title days the first real alternative champion and the last were both Kayoed by Holmes. The ones in the middle just kept losing.

When Holmes switched from the WBC to IBF witherspoon (who larry just beat) picked up the WBC belt from page who in a run simular to the WBA'S later page v tubbs and tubbs v witherspoon sequence would hand over the plastic belt to pinklon thomas who in turn would pass the belt onto YET ANOTHER Holmes chalenger Trevor berbick. Two out of three alternative champions losing to Holmes.

By the time Holmes finaly lost his IBF belt to micheal spinks he could boast that he had faced all 3 champions bonecrusher smith WBA, Trevor Berbick WBC and micheal spinks IBF beating all three of them, two of then officially.

Damn,,I forgot,,,,,a Carl Williams II would have been a great way for Larry Holmes
    to end his career.

Instead of Michael Spinks,,,,,,,,,'The Truth' deserved a rematch.

It was signed and set to happen in June, 1984, but in May, 1984, it was called off. The posters and all were out advertising the fight, but unfortunately, the promoter dropped the ball on the fight and it all fell through.

The reasons sited were financial for the Coetzee fight,I think Holmes saw it as an oppurtunity to fight an opponent that he felt more comfortable with. Coetzee lost to Greg Page in April of 1984 which says quite a bit about Mr Page, another guy that Holmes didn't want to fight due to money.Smells like bull****.

It's a carefully crafted question that is worded to discredit the very good, up and coming, strong, huge fighters Holmes did fight, like Ocassio , Witherspoon, Berbick, Carl Williams, Bonecrusher Smith, David Bey and Renaldo Snipes ... on one hand they were young in the tooth but everyone of them thrashed the fighters Bummy claims Holmes ducked ...

Nothing new here , just Bummy trying to spin again ... :verysad

In the pro ranks,Holmes would have jabbed Bobick's head off.
