I'm somebody else who thinks Larry's offering penance for the jock strap comment. Does HE actually believe Rocky would have been be the toughest historical matchup for him? He himself indicated years ago on his own site that he believed WBA counterpart Dokes [who it should be pointed out was a friend of his during their championship days] would have been the most difficult heavyweight he did not match during his prime, because Mike was first and foremost a stylist like himself. [Personally, I can't buy this about Dokes, because Dynamite's best punch was his non telegraphed short hook, not the best weapon against Larry.]

Walcott didn't seem to feel Marciano I was an especially difficult fight for him compared to some others JJW had experienced. Certainly it was no picnic for Walcott, but a 7-5, 7-5 and 8-4 lead on all cards was fairly conclusive, with little to suggest Rocky could have somehow overtaken him for an 8-7, 8-7 and 7-8 title winning SD win by sweeping the championship rounds. Joe didn't gas, he got laid out by a single shot, like Moorer did by Foreman.

Marciano's slow advance behind his 67 inch reach would have been a tremendous obstacle to overcome against a jab like the Assassin's.

Larry would flunk the polygraph under Pentothal or amobarbital if he repeated his charitable comments about Rocky under those test conditions. I just can't buy that he believes it.

For me, Ali's stated reservations about whether or not he could have beaten Marciano carry a little more weight. He spent a lot of time in the ring with a 45 year old Rocky who had trained assiduously for the cameras, at a time Muhammad himself would have been at his athletic peak. He may have been honoring Marciano's memory, but he also enjoyed a context shared by few ATGs about a fellow retired ATG. [Tunney also raved about his hero Corbett after they sparred for the movie camera before Gene won the title, but that didn't represent a change of opinion by Tunney.]

Archie Moore was convinced Rocky was a sucker for the hook, not based on footage, but on what the Mongoose perceived live from ringside for Marciano's fights. Once he actually got in the ring with Rocky though, he discovered he wasn't dealing with as easy a target for the hook as he'd first thought.

Head to head, I believe prime Holmes would have a decision win locked up entering the final scheduled rounds against Marciano. Nobody took Larry out with a single shot, not even the Blockbuster. Within his own mind, I suspect that's what Holmes himself truly thinks.

Holmes was ktfo by a small very hard punching hw in Tyson. I believe Marciano brings a more relentless version of that power, albeit possiblh not as explosive. He was much fitter than Mikey and his chin was absolute granite. He wasnt stopped on cuts so WTF does everyone think he is going down via tko.

Holmes ' best chance is a ud, keeping the rock at bay with that ramrod jab, but if he can get into the range where Larry's have is innefective due to distance, the fight aint going to be good for Holmes.

You cannot judge Marciano merely by what you can see...great work ethic...heart...stamina
...chin..."kill or be killed" attitude...conditioning...power...high work rate...at 5'10 189lbs he hit like a much bigger man...put him in with anyone...Holmes always had trouble with the right hand...ask Renaldo Snipes...imagine what the"Suzie Q" does to Holmes...

Larry Holmes is just saying something he knows white people want him to say. If you actually believe it you are either ******ed, white and a Rocky Marciano fan.

    Or Larry Holmes.

It pretty much sums up the mentality of people like you, that you cant accept it even when it comes from Holmes’s own mouth.

Maybe the fact that Larry remembers the 5"11 White guy (Nick Wells) that KO'd him2 x in his height of the amateurs makes him know size is not a factor nor color

Yes I mean Larry Holmes was really a guy who kissed ass and said what he thought people wanted him to say right?

It underlines the bigotry of people like you that even if it comes out of Holmes's own mouth you still want a get out clause:

"Oh he doesn’t really believe it, he is just kissing ass".

It might be painful for you, but one possibility that you have to at least consider, is that Holmes might have thought about it and privately reached this conclusion.

The Larry Holmes that fought Butterbean would beat any version of Marciano.

If Marciano walked on water, you would say that it was because he couldn't swim.
