I'm seriously considering putting that poster on MY ignore list. Among other reasons I think that avatar of his wife is just plain ugly. :yep
Larry talked on it during the espn classic replay of tyson's greatest fights. He says he was rusty and out of shape and that if he wouldn't have caught his arm in the ropes (already following at least 1 kd) he wouldn't have been KO'd. I don't think he said but i'm sure he believe he would outpoint godzilla and tyson on the same night if it weren't for the circumstances. He never said he was a "shell" and i don't think you can compare Ali (of the holmes fight) and Holmes (of the tyson fight.) Holmes tells you himself that Ali "didn't have it." Ali appeared weak and unhealthy in the fight and the 'slur' had already started. Ali was also several years removed from a good performance. Holmes had 19 months prior arguably decisioned Spinks (and before that he was defending his title somewhat regularly and at least resembling his younger self). In the tyson fight Holmes looked just a bit rusty and past prime, but he showed flashes of the old larry before being brutally KO'd in a fashion that tyson was doing even to prime decent HWs (though of an obviously lesser caliber than prime Holmes).
You're SO right, ray! Holmes is so lucky that a prime Ali wasn't around - otherwise they would have had a close, chess match type of fight in which either guy had a chance to win. God, is he lucky!
Seriously, I actually practice that one, but it is much easier to pull off the timing in person when you can see someone lift the glass. :yep Try it. It's fun.
i think george foreman, joe frazier and george chuvalo also have a little to do with ali's current condition as well
Shavers hit Ali with ****ing bombs. That fight, more than any, showed Ali's great ability to absorb shots to the head. Zaire & Manila showed his ridiculous ability to absorb body shots.
LMAO!! I had only heard of this. A friend told me about it and I thought he was full of shite and didn't look for it!! Thanks for posting mate.:good
there is so much insight within that era; politics, racism stardom etc.. Its good to read new stuff about it. nice thread.
In hindsight, it looks like Ali was too tough for his own good. One thing I like about Larry is that people might not like everything he says, but he's as straight a shooter as there is when it comes to interviews.
Holems always did have a gift for shooting form the hip. Everyone remembers the colorful comments about MArciano. I laughed out loud when he said that he would never fight Cooney again because he did not want the man to make money, but he would play him at checkers and beat him at that too. My favorite Holmes comment was when he said that Shavers hit him so hard that he kncoked him out and woke him back up with the same punch, adn if he had hit him less hard, he would have won the fight. Great fighter, great itnerviews.
