Any H2H list is basically just a personal choice but let’s not forget when mentioning the greats that Lewis like Tyson never got off the floor to win a fight, Louis Johnson Ali Holmes Foreman all did .
For me he did show some vulnerabilities even in his prime vs Norton, Weaver, etc. But hes probably one of the few great Heavyweights that never lost in his prime, and had great adaptability to overcome some sticky situations. I wouldn't say hes the H2H GOAT but he has an argument to being in the top 5 or maybe just outside it.
How was Holmes in his prime vs Spinks ? He was 35 years old and had fought 20 championship fights in 7 years Holmes had been slipping since 1983. His prime was 1978-1982.
A few months ago I rewatched Cooney vs Holmes recently and I'll tell you what people like to discredit Cooney, but to me he looked like a genuine world class operator and his body punching for a big man was something else. I'm picturing Cooney landing his left hooks to the body on Usyk who has some vulnerabilities in bread basket, I don't think Usyk would stand up to the body punching as well as Holmes did.
Prime Larry Holmes was a beast and a complete fighter. He was a very hard fighter to beat when he's at his best, although I think him being H2H best at HW is debatable.
So, guys like Norton, Mercer, Witherspoon weren't world class, huh? Had you said he never beat ATG who was in his prime, that would be another story. But Lennox Lewis also never beat another ATG who was in his prime (no, I don't consider Vitali an ATG). Joe Louis also never beat prime ATG heavyweight (Conn was LHW, Walcott the same as Vitali - not ATG). Tyson never beat another ATG prime HW
It's been a long time since i watched that fight. I watched highlights recently Might give it a watch sometime soon. Holmes was a tough boy for sure
Which prime fighter outside of Vitali was world class? Holyfield was on the slide and Mike was a clear shadow. Holmes beat good guys and he did beat Mercer as an old man
Lewis was the best. Beat everyone he ever faced. He had to rematch a couple but that only shows he had more balls than a lot of guys who get way too much credit.
