So Hearns keeps his speed and his power sized up, but how strong of a puncher is he sized up? Gimme a name for reference.
A 6ft 2ins 212lbs Hearns isn't just sized up, his proportions have completely changed. A sized up, in proportion, 212lbs Hearns is going to have very similar dimensions to the 6ft 6.5ins Wilder. Not to mention similiar power, similiar limitations in punch resistance and stamina, with vastly, vastly superior technical ability, to Wilder. A tough, dangerous prospect for any HW.
I was going to mention the height. His height at welterweight was enormous and it's got to translate across to heavyweight.
I honestly don't see an issue with Wilder's punch resistance. He took huge shot after huge shot against Fury in that third bout and finally succumbed due to fatigue more than anything. Truth be told, his defense wasn't the best so his chin had to have been pretty good tbh.
Fair points, Swag. In a way his punch resistance was the antithesis of that of Bruno's. I always thought Bruno was difficult to hurt, but once hurt he froze and consequently was easy to put away. I think Wilder wasn't too difficult to hurt (big as Fury is, he's not a big puncher by elite HW standards), partly due to the poor defence you allude to, but he had a lot of heart and was difficult to put away once hurt, as evidenced by Ortiz 1, as well as Fury 2 and 3. Limited punch resistance was meant as just that, rather than glass or even weak chin. I don't think Hearns had poor punch resistance, it just wasn't very good relative to his ATG level.
If Hearns weighed 212, he'd either be fat and out of shape or roided up, he had a very thin bones. And no way does he hang in there with Holmes, Hagler wrecked Him, Holmes first solid right hand puts him down for the count.
I could be misremembering but I think @JohnThomas1 and I analogised Tommy to Deontay in terms of physique and power in another thread - whilst affording Hearns the far superior skill set, of course.
Well, ok, take Deontay Wilder and make him an actually good boxer. Because a Hearns sized up to HW, with his height scaling too, will basically have Wilder’s dimensions. Wilder even has the matchstick legs. Now, a Wilder who has ATG boxing skills? ****. The entire division is in trouble.
