So Holmes defeated merciless Mercer rather easily in 92 / What if he'd matched up with Tony Tucker in place instead? Tucker was still rather good back then and a year off giving Lewis a 12 rounder. Who win s this ,Crafty Holmes or Tucker? And if Tony ,how's he do in a shot against Holy field ?
Holmes like Hearns could win fights with his jab. Hearns beat Hill solely with his jab, that is how great he was. and not saying Tucker is as good as Hill, but Holmes would beat him with his jab..
Sweetpea, you're spot on with my thinking again. That's how I see Holmes going with this. Tucker was a decent enough mobile guy , but Holmes gets in there with his jab .Tony had slowed here, still good enough to win round's but Larry's in his face with his jab. Holmes in a ten round by 7/3.
Holmes by decision. Be a much tighter fight in 1985, though Tony didn't have the jab that Carl Williams had.
Tucker would probably beat that version of Holmes. Mercer was in bad shape against both Ferguson and Holmes, thats why he lost his shot at Bowe.
Would be like a Holmes vs Bonecrusher fight. Holmes would overcome some awkward moments and jab his way out of trouble. Holmes on pts.
Tucker was still pretty good in 92', he beat McCall & Norris to get a shot with Lewis whom he was able to take the distance, Tucker edges Holmes but loses unanimous decision to Holyfield being the likely scenario.
I listened to the McCall fight on Showtime... could not see it because we did not have the subscription.. so the screen was fuzzy the whole time but i could here the announcers.. it seemed the fight was extremely close and that Tucker was fortunate to win... I think Tucker would still be able to overcome Larry in 92.. especially if he kept his weight down
Yes I think that's about how it would go. Tucker, still good enough to avoid been stopped by Holyfield. He was pretty durable in his time was Tony.
Tucker was past it at this point but so was Holmes. Its really a toss up fight at this point as Tucker is closer to his prime and Holmes was still able to compete with guys younger than him. Tucker was able to hang with Lewis, Norris, McCall and Seldon a few years after this. Id probably favor Tucker but a Holmes win is a real possibility.
Tucker wins this. He's underrated and by 92 I don't see Holmes beating him. Although it would be close but I think Tucker has enough to control the fight
Holmes. Tucker just wasnt mentally strong enough. Holmes jabs his way to victory over the overrated Tucker
