Let’s say a comeback trail Holmes faces Damiani. What would this look like ?

I don't remember Damiani having any outstanding qualities really. The only thing he would have on Larry was youth. Francesco was KO'd by Holmes victim Mercer and McCall who Holmes took the distance in a competitive fight so unless Larry was out of shape I see him winning handly.

I also remember the WBO looking like d*cks by recognising Damiani as Heavyweight champ not Tyson or Douglas.

Those guys had more power to hurt Damiani with though. And one of them was way behind on the cards before landing a nose-breaking punch. It’s possible that Holmes could have still beaten Damiani despite his advanced age. But it would have been a totally different kind of fight than Damiani vs Mercer or McCall.

Damiani would win if he got in any kind of shape at all.

    Holmes close decision

Damiani looked very ordinary in winning a decison over a shot Greg Page in September 1992.
I think Holmes still had enough left to slightly outwork Damiani. It would be really ugly with a lot of grappling.

    Old Holmes loses to Damiani.

FD had size, a well-rounded skillset and ability to fight at a good pace throughout a fight. Add to that the youth factor and Holmes - Old Holmes, let's be clear - is working uphill here.

I'll go with Damiani by decision. I love Holmes but my one big strike against him was that I don't think he ever fought a single southpaw in his entire career.

Very tough fight to pick a winner. I believe Holmes stated he came back in the 90's because the talent wasn't as loaded as the 80's. You had the progeny of Ali imitators flooding the 80's scene where the 90's had the power guys who emulated Tyson. Their management also copied the Cayton/Jacobs route with promoting going a long way.

Damiani would've been a handful for Holmes in 1992.

Damiani had nothing to hurt Holmes with. Larry maintained a solid work rate against Mercer and was in good shape. Against the likes of Damiani, It would be on par with his fight with Brian Nielsen. And Larry should have won it. It was a hometown decision against him. That Holmes was 47 years-old by then too. The 1992 version of Holmes handles Damiani.

It would be a decision win for Damiani imo. He wasn't a bad boxer at all, I think Larry would have struggled against him.

Damiani ('91) really takes it hard to Holmes and gives him a rough beating imo, but the post-Mercer Damiani of 1992 didn't look all too great. I think that Holmes might get him if he went for it after Ray.
