This obvious wouldn't be an exciting fight. But if you like tactical fights, then you would most likely like this one. I think they would circle each other and exchange jabs a lot with Holmes getting the better of Gene. Holmes ud 15. Gene would most likely have his moments, by Larry's jab would win him the fight.

I was thinking of this match -up the other day...I love match-ups like this personally...I think it would be a very interesting tactical fight...In the ring, with his mobility, Tunney would, generally speaking give any larger, less mobile opponent fits! But the problem here is, for a heavyweight, Larry Holmes in his prime, was very fast with his punches and his footwork... and he has the size advantage here as well...IMO I feel that when Gene would engage with Holmes (which would be very sporadically)....Larry has the capability of scoring on Gene...with jabs...
Holmes' speed with the left jab would still be the key here for the 'Easton Assassin' as with all his fights...I think the punch connect ratio would be very low in this fight for both fighters...
    IMO...

I of course expect most to pick Holmes for obvious reasons but I will be interested to see how many people see a potential upset.

tunney had good footwork, that would prolly give holmes a little to think about.

but tunney was too stiff and holmes had a better jab. tunney would not be able to avoid that jab.

and tunney couldnt punch enough to really bother holmes........who on the other hand had some power.

and holmes was bigger...............nah, no upset.

unless holmes is old like vs spinks or tyson. then maybe,

Tunney has no chance because holmes is superior in every way. Holmes by lopsided decision or late round tko, a total mismatch.

Sure...in my opinion...there would be an upset or 2 if they could fight 10 times, but I think Larry would win 8 out of 10 fights against Gene.

Prime for prime, Holmes is too big and good for Tunney................ Holmes batters a realing Tunney at will for 10, 12, or 15 rds., if Tunney can last that long...... Holmes with ease..........

I like Larry by dec, in a battle of the jabs with his extra size and range making the difference.

Larry Holmes, with all the natural physical advantages, would of course be the winner of this fight. It would NOT, also of course, detract from Tunney's reputation for being the skilled boxing scientist that he was..the fight's result would have been determined from the size disparity alone. Obviosly if Tunney were around in modern times he wouldn't be competing in the much bigger modern version of the heavyweight division, but would more than likely be a lightheavy or a cruiser.

Spinks beat Holmes, there is no doubt Gene would easier.

Very competitve fight, Gene had the better footwork and a bit faster, Holmes had the harder jab...I could see a close decision with a lot of punches thrown...both had decent right hands...Larry had the edge in size (weight) Gene had quick feet......a close decision could go either way....Larry has the better resume at Heavyweight
