Just because good ol' Larry mentioned it. Prime vs prime. No pacing gameplan and no post Ali. For Holmes you can use whatever you like as his prime. I got Holmes winning at least 6/10 times. Can't underestimate Foreman's power and ability to come at the gates blazing and potentially knocking him out. If I had to make a prediction it would be late TKO/KO for Holmes.
I think Holmes simply fell into the category of fighter who had Foreman's number. Granted, it wouldn't be a forgone conclusion. George could crack as hard as anyone, and with Holmes' tendency to get tagged with a good right cross, anything is possible. The problem however is that in order to win, Foreman would need an early to mid round KO, and I just don't see that happening to a peaking Holmes. Larry would most likely keep him at bay while pecking at George with his patented jab, and even occasionally nailing him with a good right or uppercut. Foreman lands some hard shots, and perhaps even sends the assassin to the canvas once. At the end of the day though, Holmes leads on the cards, while Foreman begins to run out of gas. Holmes by decision or stoppage late.
Dang hard to call. Very, very close. But I also give a slight advantage to Holmes. He has better defensive skills and that is the key point here: If you pair two dreadnoughts carrying the same artillery, the one with the strongest armor wins.
6 or 7/10 for Larry would have been about right. It is a shame they never got together, even when they doing the old-timers thing.
Yep, stylistically it does favor Holmes and he should win most of the time. On the other hand, I remember Shavers putting Holmes down and there exists the possibility of Foreman getting to Larry in a early round and taking him out.
I have spoke to both dudes about this over the yrs.......... Larry always wanted George, while George was never thrilled or drooling to fight Larry....... In my book, yes, Larry Holmes was just too crafty and quick for George Foreman..... George Foreman would have his moments as Larry Holmes rests while pacing himself for the long haul, but overall, Larry outboxes George for either a unanimous decision or late TKO with George tired but standing....... I am still pissed that this fight fell through back in 1999............ I was pumped for the event.......... deal MR.BILL
Indeed. It could have been an all time ring classic and really helped either man's legacy considerably. But then again it might hurt Foreman's legacy. Holmes would have a resume of the ATG punchers. I like your analysis, I don't think it's too far-fetched that Foreman bombs him out. But on paper Larry should win. The fact he takes Shavers best punch and gets up tells us that. Although Foreman was more durable and a better finisher in my book. Stamina wise they're close, but I'd give George ever so slight advantage there.
Larry would have kicked George's backside. He has every conceivable tool necessary for beating Big George. There is a reason why they never fought, and it's not like Holmes didn't want it.
While there is little doubt Larry has a stylistic edge, I remember reading that Larry thought Foreman was unbeatable after Georges demolitions of Norton and Frazier - and only changed his mind when he saw Ali knocked Foreman off his pedestal. So if we are talking a pre-Zaire Foreman then Foremans invincible mindset and Holmes indecision / fear ought be taken into account.
