I'm glad to see some differing opinions around here. Finally some people giving George a chance, a chance he think he rightfully deserves. Before when this thread question would come up, almost everybody (besides me and a few others) would say Holmes convincingly; and I never understood that logic considering how Holmes acted when he got hurt. Often times, he didn't hold on and simply tried to fire back on his foe. This would be a complete disaster for him against a Prime Foreman. Not that I don't think Holmes could win, he could, but if I'm betting, I would put my money on Foreman
Foreman has a chance against anyone. Getting hit by him was like getting hit with a baseball bat. Holmes has some intangibles that serve him well but he would have to dig deep to survive Foreman`s onslaught.
This would be a great fight to watch, whether prime-for-prime or in real time during the 90s. It says a lot about both fighters that both were able to compete at world-level until in their late 40s. Prime-for-prime, Foreman was a beast who only a handful of fighters could have beaten. I believe that Holmes falls into this category. The key to this fight is what happens in the early rounds. If Holmes survives the early rounds, his chances improve with each round the fight lasts. Young George tended to gas as the fight progressed, and not many of his fights lasted into the later rounds. Holmes, I believe, would box cautiously through the early rounds and take George into deep water. I think Holmes would then stop an exhausted Foreman in the later rounds of a hotly contested fight. That said, Foreman will always be dangerous and capable of turning the fight around with a well-placed shot.
The "dream" fight between Larry Holmes and George Foreman is covered in Larry Holmes' new book due out this fall. I'm told the chapter contains input from both men. More information can be found at the Facebook page: "Larry Holmes New Book" Thanks!
Best vs best Holmes more than likely outboxes Foreman, takes the fight into the later rounds and stops an exhausted Foreman in 10.
Holmes gets knocked down by Foreman at some point, but he takes the fight to him and stops an exhausted Foreman in ten rounds.
