Ok, I been wanting to make this thread for a while. Ingemar has a real shot in this one stylistically despite being inferior to holmes. Ingo's Bingo was not just deadly powerful, it was accurate and most importantly cunningly sneaky! Ingemar had cautious standup boxer style with fast hands and good jab and very high guard, just waiting for the right moment to unleash that right hand. Larry Holmes an ATG, but if you watch his filmed fights throughout his prime his biggest weakness was his tendency to get hit with big right hands, and it nearly cost him a couple fights. Ingemar has the goods to put holmes away if he tags him. Odds are Ingo will probably land his right at some point in this fight, what is going to happen to holmes? Holmes wont have a problem landing his jab on ingo, and will probably bust him up badly with his fast straight punches...but what will happen in that 7th round?
I defo see Larry Holmes getting off the canvas from an Ingo right! And see the fight being a tuff one if Larry decides to brawl with Johansson. (I still remember that Shaver's right!!!) But alot of times Larry's own ability to Punch is often overlooked, & with a record of 69 wins with 44 K.O.s I'd say Holmes also has a punchers chance at stopping a legend like Johansson. But why should Holmes brawl with Ingo when he has one of the most beautiful jabs in the history of this sport. I'd prob lean towards a Holmes Decision.
If Patterson can stop Ingo twice i can sure see Holmes doing it. He might suffer a flash KD but i would feel very secure backing him home.
So holmes gets hit with right hands throughout his career nearly kayoed by one renaldo friggin snipes right hand, yet a man with one of the most devastating right hands in history doesnt have a shot?
Not much of a shot. Ingo wasn't as tough as Snipes was. Ingo was a good right hand puncher, but lacked the speed and range to catch Holmes, and of course, Holmes fought nothing like Patterson at all. Holmes did not give the other person much of a chance to catch him flatfooted nor did he get caught on the ropes much. Keep in mind Holmes was only stopped once in his entire career 75 fight career, and that was after a lay off vs a prime Mike Tyson. I would not give Ingo much of a chance here.
I highly favor Holmes, but what are the chances of Ingo pulling a Ingo Patterson 1 on Holmes?? Pretty low.
What does toughness has to do with anything? Ingemar's right hand was far more devastating then renaldo snipes right hand, and ingo was more more cagey and skilled than renaldo Ingemar made up for lack of top handspeed with trickery and accuracy. His hands were also decently fast. Also if 6'0 200lb Mike Weaver has the range to hit holmes with many right hands throughout the fight, then 6'0 200lb ingemar johansson can do the same. He fought alot like Eddie Machen now your just making things up. i have seen countless holmes fights and fighters like Michael Weaver, Ken Norton, Renaldo Snipes, Tim Witherspoon, Bonecrusher Smith all tagged him with right hands throughout the fight and hurt holmes badly. Like I said, Holmes would probably win this fight but to say Ingemar has "no shot" when guys like mike weaver and snipes almost pulled it off is untrue.
Holmes did however survive an atrocious right hand from Shavers so the chances of him getting stopped with a single shot are slim. I agree Ingo can't be totally written off but his chances are slim.
I didnt say with one right hand, but i suspect a situation can happen where ingo can floor holmes with one right hand, holmes gets up groggy and ingo knocks him down 3 more times before the ref stops the fight with holmes out on his feet. Shavers did not have enough timeleft in the round to finish off larry. Snipes had time, but he was was renaldo friggin snipes in his first championship fight adrenaline high for the knockdown he had no idea in hell what to do when holmes got up. Weaver and Spoon had him on ***** st, ingo was better finisher than both, check the machen fight on youtube.
