The computer still goes with Larry Holmes. Based on age, size, speed, left jab and chin. Over Joe's slower-plodding. Joe loses marks, with the smaller guys, Billy Conn, floored by James Braddock, and stopped by an older Max Schmeling, almost out-boxed by Tommy Farr. Big-slow guys, never a problem with 'The Brown Bomber'. Look at all the smaller guys who baffled Joe,,,,, a little movement and quickness, completely threw him off.
No matter how you cut it. Max Schmeling, entering his bout with Joe Louis. In his previous 8-bouts was; 4-3-1 (3 KO's) In his previous 11-bouts, he had scored only '4' knock-outs. At age 31, 6' 1" 193 lbs. And, he had not fought in 11-months. And only twice, in 2-years.
Has anybody calculated the black -white fighter ratio that Joe fought against. He does have the record of '18' straight defenses against white fighters.
just look how much problems larry had with fighters with a good right hand...plus he's facing the greatest puncher ever.you think tyson is a great finisher?sit and watch when louis times him :yep
Not nearly as much as the people on this site seem to say. Had I never seen Larry fight before, I'd be thinking even I could time right hands over Larry's jabs and deck him at some point with a right hand. How many people decked Larry with a right hand over the jab? Not Shavers, not Snipes, and not Tyson, that's for sure. Out of 75 fights, Larry was down in all of 4 fights, compared to about twice that number for Louis.
Larry liked to whip those overhand rights, in rapid succession. They came in faster than Ali jabs...... Joe, had a problem moving backwards, and would catch to many punches. Still a very close fight, with each fighter stunned. Larry never hurt by a mediocre fighter, or one with low-rated power. Plus Max Schmeling,,,,,,,a 10-1 underdog.
