For me one of Holmes's best performance was before he become champion vs Earnie Shavers the 1st time. That was also the 1st time Holmes had shown he looked like he could be a very good fighter.

Yeah. Larry totally shut Earnie out in that fight.

Certainly, Larry talked it straight without the sway of rhetoric.

But all too often, the masses fall victim to how something is said, not properly listening to what is actually being said.

I think it’s cool that Larry did speak his mind, whether one agreed with him or not. There is actually a contingent out there who find him compelling and respect him for that very trait.

There was a time when Frazier was viewed as the poor relation (to Ali) , deemed to be overreacting to Ali’s cr*pspeak - it’s good to see that many now realise that Joe wasn’t overreacting at all and that a lot of what Joe had to say was just as worthy for print/broadcast, if not even more so.

I think people often forget that the 1st Shavers fight, was by Holmes's best performance up until that point. Surprisingly there was nothing really to suggest Holmes would be a long reigning champion prior to that, I remember even Howard Cossell said it was a very surprising performance from Holmes who had never shown that type of form before.

For a long time there was a view that he had a suspect chin and had a bit of dog in him, a lack of heart. Sure turned out wrong!

I’m still amazed the way he got up from that Shavers shot and survived the follow up when Shavers cornered him!
