Larry Holmes vs Peter Jackson, 4 scenarios 1) Peak Jackson leaves his day, time machines ahead to meet peak Holmes in a 15 rounder 2) Peak Holmes leaves his day, time machines back to meet peak Jackson in a finish fight 3) Living in Holmes's day, Jackson (or, if you prefer, a boxer with potential (assets and liabilities) and dedication analogous to the historical Jackson's) comes along and peaks at the same time as Holmes, and meets Holmes in a 15 rounder 4) Living in Jackson's day, Holmes (or, if you prefer, a boxer with potential (assets and liabilities) and dedication analogous to the historical Holmes) comes along and peaks at the same time as Jackson, and meets Jackson in a finish fight My picks 1) Holmes 2-1 2) Holmes 4-3 3) Holmes 6-5 4) Jackson 6-5 I think Jackson and Homes were very similar. Holmes better chin, Jackson more stamina. Size might well turn out similar in the same environment (mid 190's Ibs in the late 1880's is nothing to sneeze at).
This is about the most random fantasy matchup ever. You are right to observe that Jackson is probably more like Holmes than any other modern heavyweight. You are also right to observe that each man would have some advantage under the rule set of his own day. In terms of how they match up: You give the edge in chin to Holmes which is probably right. I would suggest that Jackson also takes the edge in power though both suggestions have to take into acount the diference in glove size. Jackson had to take punches from smaller gloves which could push up his chin but in turn his power could be scaled back for the same reason. I will try to find jacksons tale of the tape for comparison with Holmes.
