Who would have won? Holmes had one of the best jabs ever, but Thomas had a decent jab himself.

Holmes was already past it by '84, right?

    Yes

He had greatly struggled with Witherspoon in '83 then downgraded his level of opposition in an effort to milk it to 49-0.

In '84, Thomas won a clear cut decision over Witherspoon

Thomas was peaking in '84, Holmes was on the decline.

Did Holmes have enough left in '84 to beat Thomas? I don't think so.

He certainly didn't look like he wanted to fight the best the division had to offer at that juncture.

Yes ,Holmes would probably lost to Thomas in 84.
It wouldn't have been a walk in the park for pinlkon ,Holmes would never have made it easy, but I see PT getting a decision over him.
Thomas was such a waste of talent
Due to the crap he ended up taking

Pinklon by a ud, either an 8-4 win, or 10-5. Probably would beat Coetzee in a rematch as well around this time.

What caused Thomas decline after 84? He scored a eye catching KO with a big right hand over Mike Weaver but even in that fight, Weaver was giving him a lot of trouble before the KO punch. Was it due to the very long periods of in activity between fights or the heavy drug use during his teens and early adulthood that seemingly eventually caught up with his body?

I think Holmes would have held him off and squeaked by.
I think Holmes jab was much better then Thomas jab.
Pinklon has a jab and then what?
The Witherspoon who fought Holmes was much better then the one Thomas fought. Against Thomas he just seemed to not do anything.

I'd still pick '84 Holmes to outpoint him. Better legs, much better boxing mind.

Thomas. Holmes would have taken the challenge if he felt confident he'd win.
