Holmes would blast Povetkin with the jab and the right cross at will.. Much like WLAD did but Holmes wouldn't use the grappling on the inside. Povetkin may have his moments on the inside and he'd be game but the Holmes hammer (that jab) would dictate the pace of the fight and the right hands would sting enough to keep Povetkin honest, Holmes dec or late Weaver type stoppage with Povetkin close to done on his feet.
I'm a supporter of Povetkin I think he is underrated, I also think he is greater than the sum of his parts. No way does he beat Larry Holmes. He doesn't have the foot speed to consistently chase Larry down, nor the stamina, he would eat a lot of jabs all night and lose a wide Ud. He might have a few moments early on when he is fresh as he does throw good combos but by the 4th and 5th I see Larry beginning to excel. Would not be boring as both guys engage in pretty entertaining fights but comfortable 9-3 win for Larry.
If Holmes is on point then absolutely.. If he's having one of his absent minded evenings then it might be a bit closer
DinoInsane has imagined a whole other universe with guys fighting each other that never fought each other. Take your pills, crazy man.
i pick holmes to win but i think that your reason to duplicate this thread in the classic was that you needed to listen what you wanted
A more interesting topic would have been the 91 version pf Holmes vs Povetkin. Prime Holmes os too good for Povetkin.
I will start by saying I think Povetkin is a quite a good fighter, around the top 20 in heavyweight history even and before his career is done may possibly prove to be top 10 or close but I still pick Holmes to beat him. Holmes was a master of winning fights, tough ones at that, in his prime I think Povetkin gives him a very hard test with his skills and come forward style. But I see Holmes using his jab and skills to win more rounds, I also see him getting home to Povetkin and dropping him at some point with a right hand. Don't know if Holmes gets the knockout would depend how Povetkin holds up over 15 rounds, but I think he gets the win against the Russian. On a side note I've always found mythical match ups between fighters from the 70's-80's and the current European fighters very interesting. Imagine at that time if their we're big Russian Pro heavyweights like Povetkin would've been a lot of fun to see them face the Americans. Imagine Povetkin vs Lyle, Chuvalo or Frazier those all would've been great match ups.
I think Povetkin is an excellent fighter and is technically superior to most of the challengers Holmes faced, Shavers and Weaver may have hit harder but were not as strong and skilled as Alex. Holmes Jab was among the best but he was open to right hands. This would be a very close fight IMO and I would not be surprised if Alex won. The A.P. of the early fights loses but the A.P. post Vlad is a danger. In my opinion A.P. is better than anyone in the Holmes era and would be quite a challenge for a prime Holmes
