I'm sure a lot of you have seen Larry Holmes famous speech after his loss to Spinks, "Rocky Marciano couldn't hold my jock strap". Was the famous quote Larry Holmes stated after coming up short to match Marciano's record. What do you guys think?

There are many scenarios I could see playing out between Holmes and Marciano should they have met at their peaks. Overall I'd put my money on Holmes, Holmes had Ali like reserve (so did Marciano) but I feel Holmes was the far more skilled of the two. I think Holmes out boxes Marciano using his jab and whacking away with hooks attempting to keep Marciano at range. Marciano makes a real good fight of it with his relentless pressure. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Rocky hurt Holmes bad maybe even drop him with a big right hand. Marciano was a much better finisher and better conditioned then others who had Holmes in deep trouble in his prime but still I feel Holmes finds it in him to survive this and regroup and come back. I think it would make for a real classic fight overall I see it ending in a decision victory for Holmes but a knock out win for either isn't out of the question. If someone is getting blown out its Marciano. If the fight ends in dramatic fashion in the mid to late rounds it likely Marciano stopping Holmes. Wouldn't completely shock me to see Holmes be able to rally back and stop Marciano after being hurt I think this is unlikely but I do think at some point in a 15 round fight with "The Rock Holmes will be hurt and will find it in himself to regroup.I believe at Holmes at points will have to dig deep and fight with Marciano, Holmes inside fighting is very underrated he used his shoulder's and arms very well to defend, measure and got great leverage on his hooks and uppercuts on the inside

Holmes. Marciano wouldn't be able to deal with the size discrepancy, and the legendary jab. if C00NEY couldn't get the job done, how can Marciano pull it off? Holmes is all wrong for him. Marciano would be a SMW or LHW if he were fighting today.

I love the "The Rock" but I think Holmes would have handled him. Too much talent and Rocky was too short with very short arms. Marciano fighting out of the crouch might have given Holmes some problems but I don't think Rock could've reached him. Holmes by decision.

Pretty much. I don't see how Marciano wins this, Holmes is literally the worst possible matchup for him. He wouldn't be able to get past the jab.

Boxing is littered with smaller fighters who didn't have the edge in most or any of the meaningful categories like height, weight, length, reach, speed, quickness, and athleticism but should still be viewed as viable challengers based upon records (accomplished against substantively lighter opposition) or a "zero" or their laudable ring determination or the perceived size of their heart ...

And then the alarm clock sounded ...

Rock mite be a LHW today.
    Holmes jabs him to death.
Rocky was great, but got lucky in that there were no great big men at the time.

Truth is no one jabbed Rocky to death. Some thought they could. Rocky was cute in there and not easy at all to hit. Holmes may win but it would be a war.

As much as I love Rocky... this fight is all wrong for him. Yes, his reach would be an issue, and that all time great jab by Holmes would be slowing rocky down coming in.

Larry was also an excellent boxer and could tie up well if a swarmer got inside, he also had a solid inside game.

But despite all that... I would take Rocky.... except for one more thing.

Rocky will wear on Larry like he did all his other opponents, He will have the stamina to catch Holmes at one point or another... But.... Larry has the best recuperative powers I have seen at his peak, and a granite chin.

Rocky might drop him.. But I don't think Rocky will land more than one haymaker at a time. Holmes will weather the late rounds, and have enough in the books to win a decision.

perfect opponent for Rocky with his pressure and right hands....a copy of the Tyson-Holmes fight but Rocky picks up the pace about the 3rd rd and break Larry down. A right hand puts Larry down but this time he is in with a finisher

    Marciano by KO in 12

So Marciano takes Holmes out quicker than he did a 38 years old Walcott?

Walcott said he was easy to hit but not easy to hit with big shots.Holmes wouldn't have to bomb, he would win this with the left hand. Rocky too small , and too slow, throw in cut prone skin, it's a recipe for a Holmes win by tko.
