Holmes has said that he was happy that he never had to face Joe in the ring. He felt he would have gotten "smoked", no pun intended.
I go with Frazier....He would be better served if he had a better right hand but I see this being like the Cooney fight but with a more durable, solid foe. Frazier also fought at a relentless pace and went to the body with the Left hook and the right....Frazier by a stp late or a UD
Tough fight to predict. I can definitely see a scenario where Holmes outboxes Frazier and busts him up with his jab and right cross. But I can also envision a relentless, snarling Frazier applying constant pressure to Holmes and ravaging his body with thudding bodyshots. My gut feeling is that Frazier would get busted up early but eventually wear Holmes down and probably stop him late!
The thing here is that BOTH have a difficult style for the other. Both will be awkward and they will present each other with problems on a consistent basis. It would see saw with both having good moments thoughout. It will be a gruelling fight, and again both are perfectly suited to that sort of scenario.
i would put my money on Larry. he has survived bigger fighters-6'5" 225 lbs. with better left hooks and still come out on top. His right cross was better than Ali's
Frazier will smother him with his high work rate and thoes relentless body shots. Holmes nakered in the later rounds and Frazier TKO. (bias)
Snipes was brawling and swarming with Holmes. He weaved, ducked trying to get in close range with his head low. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlu4R_ZobU0
Where did he say that? I've never seen Holmes talk of anyone smoking him. In fact Larry usually bags the **** out of those thought to be around or above him.
No kidding, If Jesus Christ almighty said that he'd beat Holmes, Larry would respond with something like " Tell Jesus to bring his skinny white ass over here, and knock the ****in' sandals right off his feet. "
Given that the version of Frazier who fought Floyd Cummings in 1981, was at his absolute peak, I'd say a 1973 version would be a great win for Holmes.
I can't speak for him, but i remember the ESB poster Bummy Davis telling a story of how Holmes was bragging about beating Marvis Frazier during a post-fight party, when Joe showed up. Apparently Larry was very respectful, and toned down his voice when Joe came up, and said that he was glad to have fought son instead of father. Something along those lines, Bummy can tell you more.
I was invited to a party after the Larry Holmes/Scott Frank fight and Holmes was having a beer and taking about how he would beat Marvis who Holmes referred to as a midget. Frazier was very serious and although 5"11 more impressive and imposing than anyone in the room, thick neck head, shoulders, scary and thick, shoulders...Frazier walk up to Holmes holding the mike and Larry said "not you Joe" Not you" we all started laughing and Joe lightened up but he was walking strait towards Larry before that and there was tension in the room before Larry made us laugh....I remember thinking if I had to I would fight anyone in the room but Joe i would have to shoot.
