Arguably the two greatest jabs in heavyweight history, who takes it? Holmes had a very similar style to ali who dethrowned Liston. However, I do not see Holmes having that good of movement as compared to prime ali. I see liston stopping him. what do you think?
Holmes by late stoppage or lopsided decision. He was ultra-careful against punchers, and would be patient, picking Liston apart a piece here and a piece there.
Holmes stops him between 10 and 15 and is way ahead on points. Too classy and polished a fighter for Liston, given that Holmes could take Sonny's punch -- which he undoubtedly could.
Liston wasn't just a puncher. He was a highly skilled boxer as well and had an equally impressive jab as larry holmes. Holmes is in for a rough one here, especially since Larry loved to brawl. Larry had a big heart and would survive, but Liston in his prime could fight 12 fast paced rounds and I think he would be able to keep up with Larry the whole fight, with his more punishing blows being the difference in the scoring. Sonny Liston by split decision
I think it was Ferdie Pacheco who commented that Liston had trouble with movement "but not Holmes' type of movement". I agree. Larry did not have Clay-like or Machen-like movement and was not evasive enough to keep away from Sonny. He would have major problems with Sonny's reach on the outside as well. Lesser fighters than Liston got inside on Holmes and made him fight it out (Weaver, etc). I see Liston hurting Holmes more often than Holmes hurts Liston. Liston by decision or late rounds tko.
Holmes was an actual great fighter, not a fake senior citizen with a special chemical punch like no other HW champ -(). I'd say wide unanimous decision or late stoppage for Holmes as well. :yep
I have to follow the trend and go with Holmes. To skillful and cute for Sonny, he's also tough enough. I see Liston unable to get off his stool during the final third of the fight.
Larry had a great right hand and a great jab, and he might not move around like Ali, but he was just as effective with speed. I think Larry pummels Liston with the jab and stops him by TKO by swelling in about round 9 or 10.
