True. Witherspoon was vastly inexperienced and Holmes was a seasoned 15 round fighter.

I don't ever recall Larry saying that. No way Holmes gets in there unless he thinks he can win.
Larry was well past his best, but to assert that he was just a sacrificial offering looking for the money is false.

It is a pretty commonly told story. It's hard to miss it on the internet. King shows up at Larrys door, Larry says I can't beat Mike Tyson, King says I will pay you 3.5 million dollars, Larry said where's Mike Tyson.

I can agree with this, Holmes to me really started getting noticed after Cooney. Not Mercer, though the Mercer fight just confirmed it. The media didnt like his personality, but he was competing and compared to Ali, and that was the real problem.

For sure. He gained some respect as a champ and a boxer after the Cooney win. The media had hyped Cooney up and he was seen as a legitimate threat to Holmes and the win got him some points.

Prime 1988 Tyson was also much better than 1992 Ray Mercer.

I mean, Ray Mercer was beaten by club fighter Jesse Ferguson not long after losing to Holmes.

For sure, but Mercer was still top 5 and top 10 over the year or so Holmes beat him. Obviously Tyson is on a different planet.

He could have trained hard for two months and Tyson would still have easily taken him out.

Larry didn't have the legs to move for 12 rounds or the power to keep Tyson off. He always had the flaw of holding his left way to low.

Larry was able to beat Mercer because Mercer had no defense and moved in straight lines.

Prime Larry v 1988 Tyson is like a 50/50 fight.

Larry simply was quite past his prime by 1988.
