I have to say I enjoy HBOs stuff. Lampley, Merchant are brilliant. I live in England and SKYs broadcasting team are awful - we have to endure that mindless bore of a **** Jim Watt who knows next to nothing about a sport he used to particpate in. I enjoy watching boxing on HBO and Larry is a legend. Drunk or not. Legend
He is always like that to me. And I believe HBO has a mic feed telling him what to say because he doesnt have the brain power to come up with anything on his own. When he speaks on his own its like " whyyyydd did the referree dooooo thadt just let the guys fight"
Drunk or not, I cannot figure out what ANYBODY likes about Merchant. The only thing worse than his commentary is his rambling, 5 minute analogies that are so complex a rocket scientist would have a hard time keeping up with them. Max Kellerman is twice the boxing analyst that Merchant is or ever has been. Lastly, Merchant is an old ass bias biggot.
Doomed? Because Max Kellerman actually speaks about relavent things that have to do with boxing instead of trying to create 18 dimensioned analogies? Merchant loses himself most of the time. The man struggles to put together basic thoughts. He is old as ****, it happens. It's called being senile!
Perhaps you are right. However, not in my eyes. Larry Merchant is a part of what makes HBO the heart and soul of boxing. He will be missed by far more people than those who wish him gone. I did not always agree with him but he never failed to do what he was paid to do and that is entertain us with his unique wit and knowledge of a sport he loves as much as we do.
Thats the thing, he has ZERO knowledge of boxing. He is about as witty as a doorknob as most of his nonsense is uncomprehensible, let alone witty.
McGuigan sometimes commentates on ITV still. He is a very good commentator, he used to be on Sky a while back though during the mid 90s I think.
