Agreed 100%. Boxing is much better when he's not a part of it.

He should either stay in the retirement home or fight a live opponent. Right now, he's just wasting time.

What I AM looking forward to is more of Larry Merchant's precious final five years or so on this earth, so we can appreciate the wisdom of a great observer of the sport whose love for it compares very well with the celebrity "boxers" like Floyd Mayweather.

I don't understand the hate on Merchant. Seems Floyd fans upset with the critical nature Merchant has for Floyd and other fighters. It wasn't like Jim Grey being condescending to James Toney. Merchant was simply doing his job, wasn't really being disrespectful whatsoever. He's just not political correct and soft in his interviews. Floyd thinks he doesn't get a fair shake. It's like he has a chip on his shoulder towards any criticism against him. So Floyd could have stopped there, but instead he went on a tirade about how Merchant was **** and how he doesn't know **** about boxing. Hardly classy. Who can blame Merchant for responding the way he did. I thought it was absolutely hilarious, although he probably should've just walked to Ortiz after that.

Disagree with the racial nonsense, but agree with the sentiments that Merchant is abit of a bully. He talks **** because he knows nothing is going to come back to him, he is too old for the fighters to intimidate, he is too intelligent and educated for them to talk back to, plus he is the main guy with HBO their money source. As such he has the position of power, and as such should act with restraint.
Instead he just hits them with free shots and they are expected to smile about it, even after a fight when nerves are riding high.
I dislike Mayweather intensely but don't actually blame him for how he reacted.

Larry was never afraid to speak his mind, and last night proved that. He's a dying breed, in a boxing world full of commentators that are nuthuggers (Kellerman) or overly emotional fanboys (Lampley). I wanna see a fighter get asked the hard questions, not softball pitches that are meant for the fighter to look good on tv. While Jim Gray does ask the hard questions, he comes off as scared white guy on camera. Merchant on the other hand stays in the pocket and lets it rip when it comes to his line of questioning.

I hope Larry is with HBO doing telecasts until he dies.

    Exactly.

This is just the job that Merchant does and always has done. If anyone has seen clips of him from the 70's, he talks in the same way and, yeah, that probably is disrespectful to certain fighters. At least Merchant is honest though. 99% of people involved in the entertainment business are sycophantic whereas Merchant tells it like he sees it. If he thinks Jones is fighting nobodies, why shouldn't he say it? Why shouldn't he have been critical towards Mayweather for fighting Baldomir and putting on a terrible fight?

In the eyes of many, what Merchant says is what they are thinking. He tells it like it is, to any fighter. It doesn't matter what colour or race they are, Merchant will give his honest assessment.

These cries of racism say far more about the people saying that than Merchant. He's just an honest man. If people are that paranoid and emotional that they have to resort to calling people racist when they disagree, then that's a sad for them.

Yep, only Floyd fans would say Merchant is 10X better than Grey.

Merchant is a bully? Really? I thought he was just doing his job, asking the questions the viewers want to hear answered.
