That doesn't mean anything ... he's had 25 yrs of practice ... and just because he's not slurring or throwing up doesn't mean that he doesn't have a buzz on. And you see that all Merchant does is the blow by blow ... he's not giving an expert analysis ...
What about the "near miss" ... that they kept saying ... isn't a near miss either a grazing blow or a miss? Those near misses were shots that didn't land !!
He's drunk (Lampley) ... Larry Merchant doesn't sound bad - he's not slurring or obviously drunk ... but Letterman sounds like it to a tee ... and we wonder where Letterman is ... he's at the bar There is a such thing as highly functioning drunk people !!
If Lennox Lewis was in this poll, he'd be more succesful in terms of getting votes than he was succesful as a HW champ. Sorry Lennox: nice guy, excellent fighter, but WHAT a god-awful commentator.
Man...I rewatched Mijares v. Navarro twice and had to turn the volume down...Lampley's voice and accent is SO ANNOYING! :fire  :fire  All three commentators were talking about unrelated stuff a lot of the time, especially Lampley...:-( ...poor commentators...and Jim's scoring was just peculiar, I thought!:verysad
I actually like Lennox. Cracks me up whenever he tries his best to sound articulate and can't come up with a proper word! But I like him better than Manny and Lampley. In my mind, in terms of recent HBO commentators... Merchant > Foreman > Lewis > Steward > Lampley > RJJ > Kellerman
I watched that fight last night and i'm wonder what the hell the judge was thinking that scored it in favor of Navarro? I don't like listening to the commentators ... because the first time I watched the fight live, when Mijares made an ajustment they made it seem like Mijares was getting overwhlemed and was backing and getting on his toes because of Navarro not because of tactics.
RJJ was the best hands down ... they you got my favorite George Foreman who thought that boxing was the key to victory ... after 3 knock downs and some clear 10-9 rounds ... you would think you need the knockout George ... No, If he just use his jab and box ... he can still win ... you don't know what the judges are thinking and if you take these last rounds it could be in your favor.
Greatest Foreman commentary though had to have been when he said the guy in your avatar was scared of Oscar de la Hoya's muscular shoulders.
def Larry Merchant but i love when he goes on crazy rants about salt water taffy or something else that makes no sense:thumbsup
All of them are great, best team in Boxing IMO..............Foreman was better than Manny though, wish he would come back to HBO.
