Say what you want about the man... but if he was 50 years younger... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6Zert5VaWk Hear the little man Ellerbe giving it large to an old man right at the end? Brave lions those guys. atsch
Was working for Top Rank last weekend on the broadcast for UK TV.... Mikey Garcia fight. Man has serious boxing knowledge.
It was hilarious watching the PPV King put Merchant's prehistoric ass in his place live in front of millions. Leonard giving it to the geezer was just icing on the cake.
Hes worth more than your 50 year old and still in college ass thats for sure Hes a legend and an hes in the Boxing Hall Of Fame something some of your fav fighters will never be.
Glad hes no longer behind the mic. Bitter, boring, never stepped in the ring but talks down to fighters, and having his (admittedly, funny) senile rants was bad for the image of HBO Boxing. That being said.... there was something about him being drunk behind the mic, babbling about, with Jim right beside him with a huge smile but you could see the 'wtf are you talking about' look, that was funny. And he made for some cool moments, like the mayweather one and the one where he shoves some dude out of the way during an interview lol. But overall, too bitter, too cynical, and the booth is better without him, imo. Wish they would get rid of Max next.
Not anywhere near as good as the P4P best boxing commentator in the world the GREAT JIM WATT of Scotland !
I don't think Merchant ever really liked Mayweather for some reason. I remember in one of the old fights he's asking Mayweather some questions and at the end of the post fight interview he says, "Thanks Floyd, you're only fast inside the ring." --Essentially insulting the guy's intelligence. Also, commentary wise, he always talked down Mayweather's power. Whenever Lampley or Kellerman would gush over a powerful right hand or something, Merchant always replied with something like, "I don't see any power" or "what power?" On the other hand, Merchant is a die hard Pacquiao fan. I have to wonder if some of his dislike for Mayweather is he feels that Pacquiao truly deserves to be the Pound for Pound #1 and known as the greatest fighter of his generation. To him it feels like Mayweather is "stealing" those titles with his philly shell style, and, in some way, he's afraid Mayweather's legacy will overshadow the great Manny Pacquiao. Either way, he's a bitter old fool and it's no surprise that HBO got rid of him. He turned into the most biased, divisive commentator on the HBO roster.
