Sorry if this has already been posted. "I think that I'm in a long line of media people that he feels have not given him as much credit as he gives himself. In this instance he fought an outstanding fight up until that crisis moment, and the fans saw what they saw. They saw a 'sucker punch' ending a fight. Now, was Mayweather within his rights to throw it? Absolutely. Should he have, in my opinion? No. It was a legal blow but that's not the way great champions do it. And the kid Ortiz has blame on him aswell. Now I'm interviewing Mayweather, and I think he's absorbing boo's from the crowd, which are getting more explosive, more imflammatory, and he understands that he's not going to get all the credit he deserves, again. That's what set him off, in my opinion."
Larry a hater, he's mad because money is the best and no one could beat him. You know larry wanted that big ass messican to beat floyd! nope, didnt happen. Money a G
That is only half of the story. He is leaving out the fact that over the past few years, he has said everything possible to discredit Floyd and other boxers. And he barely mentions that Ortiz deserves any blame. He glosses over his name and focuses on Floyd. He's still a ***git. **** him.
Go watch the Floyd/Oscar fight. Larry was throwing all kinds of little smartass remarks throughout that whole fight.
You mad. He always hates on money, Yet he doesnt talk about tree boys dirty fighting. I guess because vic-***** is all jolly like a 13 year old school boy when you talk to him.
+1 this has already be covered there is a FRESH VIDEO with Larry Merchant talking all kinds of lip...
Discrediting might not be the best word but he certainly isn't his biggest fan and makes it quite clear, even as recently as pre-Mosley saying that Floyd ducks and dodges opponents as well as he does punches. He asked Mayweather the same question three times and Floyd answered it how he wanted to, even legitimately answering it by saying that he took three attempted, intentional butts and decided that it was time to get dirty. Why did Larry continue to hound Floyd about it? Floyd is not there to be embarrassed by the commentator. He should have ended it when he said "Im going to let you speak with Victor Ortiz" as that would have been appropriate IMO. But, Floyd is Floyd
Floyd wasn't answering the questions directed at him so Larry attempted to reword it a few times. However, Floyd didn't start throwing his toys out of the pram until Larry changed the subject, and was in the process of giving him some credit for an outstanding showing. That is what I don't understand. I've never really heard or seen Larry Merchant "discredit" Floyd Mayweather, I've only heard him pose legitimate and fair questions to the fighter himself, and to also make accurate observations regarding his career path. Nothing that warranted the outburst Floyd was responsible for on Saturday night in any case.
What Merchant says in that quote is true. But it is indeed half the truth. It's no secret he is not fond of Mayweather, and he has downplayed Floyd's performances quite a few times in the past. Mayweather was already preoccupied with Merchant, and Larry went very aggresively in his interview. Also, the fact that he never made such fuss about what Ortiz did is also a sign of bias on his part.
"accurate observations" to some, including you, doesn't make it fair or accurate. No boxer in history rips through nothing but all time greats. Boxers that we consider warriors today don't have nearly the resume Floyd does. Floyd brings a lot of it upon himself for being such a dickhead but he certainly doesn't get the respect he deserves for his performances and legacy, but that will come when he's gone I'm sure.
