UFC President Dana White has been on quite the tear lately, telling various media outlets his unabashed thoughts towards HBO color commentator Larry Merchant. On September 17th, Merchant got into a bit of verbal fisticuffs with Floyd Mayweather Jr. following the fighters shocking 4th round knockout over Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas and White was quick to side with Mayweather. From calling Merchants on-air antics embarrassing to claiming that the 80-year old veteran is senile, White hasnt let up one bit. While some may have responded to Whites insults with venom of their own, Merchant simply brushed his snide remarks off and tried to take the high road. Lets see, anyone who can make a multi-million dollar business out of street fighting has to be respected, Merchant opened up during our recent conversation. My opinion is that anyone is allowed to put up a tent, put on a show, and invite people to come. And obviously hes had a lot of success. Good for him. But as far as Merchant ever being a fan of Mixed Martial Arts? Dont count on it anytime soon. I dont watch it. I dont get a so-called sport in which you can have a 6-2 record and be called a world champion. I just dont appreciate the finer points of MMA, Merchant continued. It was surprising to hear Merchant so unfazed by Whites criticisms of him, but then again, you cant make it as long as he has in the sport of boxing without having thick skin and learning how to roll with the punches. Its a free country. Im a commentator, and if Im commenting and observing on others than how can I not be open to others observing and commenting on me? what a ****, wish he'd hurry up and die
enough of the Dana says Dana farts Dana poos threads Seriously no one on here gives a **** what the bald ***** says :twisted:
he is one of the most influential and important men in mma, this is an mma forum so its extremely relevant and a lot of people will want to know what he says and thinks, also if you read the thread properly it has nothing got to do with what dana said its about LARRY MERCHANTS reply to him
“It’s a free country. I’m a commentator, and if I’m commenting and observing on others than how can I not be open to others observing and commenting on me?” - didn't like the MMA hatred but this line is gangster.
Boxing is a part of MMA thats rubbish about the 6-2 comment. MMA game is different. Best fight the best. Also guys come into the sport from other backgrounds (boxing, wrestling etc) and have competed in that and just go straight to the top because they are good enough, like Lesner etc The problem with boxing is that there are too many padded records, and the best not fighting the best all the time.
Larry's on the war path! I expect him to bum rush his way into the White House to sort out the economy next then making speeches at the UN inspiring world peace
I can agree about the padded records, but seriously...6-2 records? Only reason Brock got a shot is because he's such a huge draw. I don't really think many fighters would deserve a shot at the title with an 8-0 record. I mean look at Cormier in Strikeforce (who is an olympic wrestler) whom got ADDED (not put on originally) to the tournament because Overeem withdrew. Besides, even if these guys are good enough, I think you should build them up a little before making them HW champion. A guy with a 6-2 record, whom people never heard of, comes in and beats the **** out of your established Heavyweight champ?! How weak does your company look? How crappy does your champion look? The crap that happened with Brock was sad for UFC (other than the $ they made of course). A guy gets beat his 2nd fight by Mir, an established fighter, by LUCK. Fights on, racks up some pretty good wins against Couture, herring, etc, and then people finally find out with Carwin..UHH, this guy can't take a punch whatsoever!! You got your HW champ who is scared to death of getting hit! Then Cain, whom many people didn't really know, especially redneck UFC fanboys rooting for Brock. He comes in and bich slaps Brock around like a girl LOL. So brock can't take a punch, and has defeated like 3 big names in your sport? He's a big strong guy with wrestling experience (though I don't see it..He just hammerfists people), but he sucks, and disgraced the belt more than Tim Sylvia.
It's unfair to use Brock Lesnar as an example of how title shots are arranged, Brock Lesnar is one of a kind. He came in to the company and is still the first guy who didn't have any notable victories and got a title shot, but he still delivered, and that's why he deserves to be in the main events today, but obviously it's because of his drawing power.
hows about the baddest man on the planet? hes walking straight into a shot with the UFCs biggest star...... Youre right though, Brock was an exception, and Overeem will be too
