A spot on, says what he thinks ring color broadcaster who calls it like he sees it, and call BS with the best of them OR A an older gambler who's had one too many, relying on que cards during the interviews?
I thought he was great. Didn't kowtow to a fighter's ego or reputation, which in turn forced his interviewees to actually think about what they said and gave us viewers a bit more to think about. I have never understood why so many people seem to think that big name fighters (or celebrities in general) should be exempt from hearing things which might make them feel a little uncomfortable, or from facing questions which they can't just automatically bat away with the usual bland clichés and instead force them to actually think.
He starting regressing circa the mid 00s and by the end he was just an old man yelling at a cloud. But from the 80s to 2000 he was superb. They'll never be another Merchant.
Yeah I remember a postfight interview where Lennox Lewis said ‘You can hear by silence.’ Larry didn’t bat on eye, following up with: ‘Exactly what does that mean?’ Lennox promptly tripped all over himself with no explanation. He clearly thought it was something that would sound profound and instead Merchant with a simple question exposed him. I miss the HBO fights and HBO crew.
As he got older, his comments occasionally became stranger. But I still looked forward to hearing him call fights, and I was saddened when he retired.
Awesome when he was younger, funny as **** when he was older. I found myself laughing (almost historically) at some of the stuff he murmured as he got older.
"Fernando, Vargas may...have had a six-pack in, his, stomach...He did not, have, a, six....pack in his, chin."
It was embarrassing to see Merchant reduced to that kind of buffoonery. Became a walking caricature by the end of his illustrious career.
Hated the Lampley/Merchant team. They could make any fight funereal. Tyson/Douglas was probably one of the ten most incredible sporting events of the 1900s and they sounded like they were calling Michael Nunn vs. Steve Little or something.
