I don't understand what the deal was with Pacheco. 90% of the time he sounded like he'd rather be doing anything else, but he didn't seem like the type who desperately needed money.
I always found him really annoying. The way he left a huge gap between each word like God was talking from the mountain. And he always thought his opinions were fact. While no, they were just opinions. That said some of his observations were dead on. But Merchant would start talking, you'd go for a beer and when you came back he was still lumbering along.
I remember that ! He said it to Floyd after Floyd responded to question completely insulting Larry. Larry looked at the camara, Then looked at Floyd and said If I was 50 years older I would kick your ass! Then I think they started making T- shirts with that statement. Hilarious. There's only one Larry Merchant!
He was unfair with some fighter he would judge too defensive such as Chris Byrd but all in all he was awesome.
I might add that Jim Lampley had his favorites too, it was obvious. Kind of like Howard Cosell, he had his favorites as well. The two that appeared impartial were Tom Brookshire and Pat Summerall on CBS Sports Spectacular.Sometimes Jerry Quarry was one of the announcers.
Larry Merchant was the best... Him and Lampley made a hilarious team, plus Emanuel Steward or Foreman was the best trio. It was funny when Merchant made some quasi gay comments about how handsome Wlad Klitschko was
I liked Larry, I didn't always agree with him, but he spoke his mind, and when interviewing fighters he did a good job. Unlike Jim Gray.
I dont care for the guy. Like a lot of people here certainly have, I have listened to a LOT of Larry Merchant. As an American fan, one of my favorite things about the YouTube boxing channels is getting to rewatch sooo many great HBO fights, and doing so without having to listen to that asshat as, 9 outta 10 times or so you can find that classic fight being commentated on by someone else! I really have become a fan of Ian Darke and both Jim Watt and Glenn McCrory who teamed with him often. Point being, I can usually find another option. He does have some funny highlights, some great off the cuff moments but they got way to few and far between the longer he was on. The longer he was on brought times where he would attempt to blatantly disrespect the opinions of his coworkers, sometimes live in front of millions of fans, co-workers he was calling fights with like, George Foreman and Roy Jones Jr. You can disagree with opinions, even with those of a fighter during a fight, I am not saying that. But telling Roy Jones that he doesn't actually know what he is seeing, and is just caught up in the expectations of the fight or some BS like that, when his boy Pac man was getting it taken to him. A big no no around Larry. Then Foreman. Man, I didn't like a lot of his work to be honest, he would say some oddball stuff and Larry seemed to personally enjoy picking at Foreman. Anyway, not a big fan. But calling Johnson a Harpooned whale? That was a good one! Lewis and drowning in Oceans 11? Brutally funny.
Larry was a lot of things but his coverage of Sonny Liston when he wrote for the newspaper was some of the most horrid racist garbage I’ve ever read.
