Larry Merchant was one of the better Jewish boxing commentators. Trivia: he changed his surname name from Kaufman in the 1950s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Merchant
One thing about Larry is he would never try to insult the viewers about what we were watching. If the fight was an unnecessary mismatch he’ll say it. HBO wouldn’t have been able to pay him enough to say Tank was a 5 time 3 division champion the way those guys did during the Rollie fight..
If a fight was a mismatch or a joke Merchant would say it. If a fighter had a Glass Jaw Merchant would say it. Who remembers Merchant getting suspended from HBO because he said one of De La Hoya’s mariachi band music ring walks “sucked”
I generally liked him. He spoke his mind without being a blowhard like Teddy Atlas. Where lampley could be an embarrassing company man, larry would actually call out the name guys. He didnt overly rely on stats or talk too much Hes great in build up skows from the 80s broadcasts. His delivery got a little too slow by the end and it was time for him to go though he did a fight with Foreman that was pretty good in the last couple of years but it wasn't on a major stream
I remember when Foreman defended his title against Schulz he kept scoring most rounds to Foreman and went completely against everyone else
