What is your opinion for people who have undergone laser eye surgery and wish to continue boxing?

Do you think it is fair to be barred from competing in the sport if you had laser eye treatment?

The reason I ask is because the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) which is the governing body for amateur boxing in the UK automatically bars you from boxing with them if you had laser eye treatment as they do not distinguish between surface or flap treatments.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) which is the governing body for professional boxing allows professional boxers to compete only if they had surface laser eye treatment (PRK/LASEK).

I do not understand why two governing bodies have different guidelines regarding laser eye treatments.

I am going challenge ABA policy as I think it is unfair and outdated (2006) that I am barred from the sport I love just because I had LASEK, after the healing period, there is no appreciable difference from a normal eye with regard to injury any ways.

USA boxing I think allows laser eye treatment.

Wow, that's a ****ing stupid rule. All the best with your challenge to that. I could imagine that being newsworthy if they turned you down because you've had your eyes lasered

people heal at different rates. they should allow those who have had lasek/prk or even lasik as long as there is clearance from the doctor at least for the safety of the boxers.

i had my laser eye surgery in march 2005 or 2006. i had the lasik treatment where they cut the flap. i was an amatuer boxer in new york but i had stopped. i just started training again the past 2 years and recently started sparring 1 or 2x a week.

i took a few shots in the eye with no issues. However, it does not mean that an injury cannot occur!

then you've had more than enough time to make sure your eyes have healed then. yeah, the risk with lasik is that the flap can open up when touched up badly. but i was told by the doctor that that was a rare case, still a risk nonetheless.

well i am walking around now at 70-72 kg (154-158) pounds. when i fought back in the days, I fought at junior lightweight as a 23 year old. i have been sparring guys who are 80k to 90kg. they were not going crazy, but some have been definitely letting their hands go.

So yeah my eyes have been holding up well so far. i guess if i wanted to go pro, just dont tell the boxing comission, i am not sure if they can tell anyway that you had laser surgery with eye exam. i was training to get back in shape but i have a bad case of shoulder tendinitis. My shoulder hurts me more than my eyes.
