I ordered all of these heavyweight PPVs after Lewis-Tyson in 2002 (which I also ordered). Roy Jones vs. John Ruiz March 1, 2003 James Toney vs. Evander Holyfield October 4, 2003 Chris Byrd vs Andrew Golota John Ruiz vs Fres Oquendo April 17, 2004 Andrew Golota vs. John Ruiz Chris Byrd vs. Jameel McCline Hasim Rahman vs. Kali Meehan Larry Donald vs. Evander Holyfield November 13, 2004 Vitali Klitschko vs. Danny Williams December 11, 2004 Hasim Rahman vs. Monte Barrett August 13, 2005 Oleg Maskaev vs. Hasim Rahman II August 12, 2006 Sultan Ibragimov vs. Evander Holyfield October 13, 2007 David Haye vs. Nicolay Valuev November 7, 2009 The Vitali Klitschko-Hasim Rahman fight was supposed to be on PPV, but Klitschko retired.
Of those listed, the last one I remember ordering was Maskaev-Rahman II. I otherwise got most, but not all of those.
Hopefully it does really well and can propel Wilder into mainstream America. It's criminal to me he isn't a household name.
Wasn't Wlad vs Chambers (2010) PPV in the US too? That said, a HW titlefight doesn't have to be bad when it isn't on ppv, and certainly isn't always good when it is. PPV is just a method to get the most money out of a smaller audience instead of trying to get as much people viewing as possible.
Baffles me too. Amercian heavyweight, in shape, undefeated, KO's everyone, seems a nice guy when he's not putting on the fake persona. He's been awfully promoted, his handlers had no faith in him and over protected him. Imagine how differently he would be viewed had he fought Wlad instead of Jennings and had won or even just given him a tough fight. Instead he was fed journeymen in title defences. The Ortiz fight proved he's no joke and a legit top heavyweight but was wasting his prime being over protected.
I wasn't really deeply into boxing when Wlad fought Jennings. I got hardcore into it shortly after, around when Wilder made Spzlika pee himself. But I remember thinking wow Wlad fight an American here? So I looked up Jennings. Meh. Then I researched other Americans and saw Wilder. Ugh. Why isn't this man household like Tyson?! Wlad did spare him maybe he knew How Manny and Mayweather became global is sitting front row at important NBA games. Interviews on ESPN (mostly floyd). And late night shows Kimmel, Fallon etc (mostly Manny). AJ doesnt even like basketball but was courtside at a Golden State Western Finals game last year. Reggie Miller named dropped him. If I was DW I would have been courtside at the next game in Houston and interviewed by the inside the NBA crew (he should absolutely go on that show before Fury fight. Specially with Barkley Alabama connection.) NBA is the quickest way to mainstream America. (Side note Fury-DW at Staples right smack dab in the middle of a Lakers home stand. Wilder should make sure LeBron is front row.) AJ beat Wilder to late night. He was on Conan this year. A Shame because I thought Conan was perfect for Wilder. Still can be. But Kimmel, Fallon Colbert. Get your butt on one of them. Then pbc just signed a deal with fox. Fight Brezeale on there. Then promote the crap out of it on ESPN. Also if Mayweather and Pac fight early December I'd absolutely use it to my advantage if I was Wilder and Fury. Talk as much sh*t and how you are the real fight. Think if Wilder does this he will be household.
There was quite some reason behind him not fighting Wlad at the time, because he got served 2 black eyes and a cake for his birthday by the then champ when at a trainingcamp. There were many alarmbells sounding in Wilder's career, that seem to have been silenced over time though. But back then it didn't look like he had much of a chance.
I don't think Wlad ever headlined a US PPV (by his choice as I had understood it). He was on a few Lewis under cards, however.
I still think it wound up not being available on US TV. I could well be mistaken, but I definitely don't remember being able to watch that one on TV, and I'd tend to think I would have ordered it if I could have.
The Ortiz fight did wonders for his profile. It's all about opposition. You need high profile names to gain more popularity. It baffles me when people are shocked that he is not more popular. He has faced 2 top 10 contenders in 10 years. It's absolutely ridiculous. I get that he had a slow start(which paid off), but what about his title run? And people wonder why he isn't more popular.
All of you really hit the nail on the head about Wilders lack of popularity. Combo of poor promotion and poor opposition, which he is finally starting to resolve. Hopelully he' ll start showing up to NBA games (he needs to camp out at home Lakers games before the fight when the regular season starts)
