Anyone catch the DeMarco/Reyes fight on Showtime last night? If not, let me give you a quick recap. For the first 5 rounds, DeMarco seemed to win the rounds. Not based on anything special. He just seemed to impose his will a little more as he's naturally the taller guy with the reach and power advantage. He pressed the action and this made the smaller Reyes somewhat tentative. DeMarco got in consistent shots but few flush shots and he was winning rounds based more on activity and Reyes' lackthereof. And in the 3rd, DeMarco even got a KD catching Reyes coming in with a right hook. Somewhat of a flash though and Reyes wasn't hurt. So most people had DeMarco winning the first 5 including an extra point for the KD. Then starting from round 6, things changed. In the most dominant round of the fight, Reyes must've landed about 15 hard, flush shots. And that trend continued from 7-10. Reyes was landing eye popping lead right hands and countering effectively. DeMarco was no longer the aggressor as he was getting caught flush when he threw and Reyes was now pressing the action. So if one were to score this fight, you would give it to DeMarco because of the KD. But i think that's where boxing's scoring system has a problem. It gives 10-9 rounds not only to the guy who sqeezes a round out based on activity and not doing anything special (DeMarco) but 10-9 rounds to the guy who might be bordering on a 10-8 rounds by landing hard, flush shots, exhibiting ring generalship and defense, and just controlling the action (Reyes). This was one of those rare fights where this flaw was revealed almost perfectly. Thoughts?
If thats the case, the guy losing the tight rounds has to come and make sure he doesn't lose them rounds. One was being smart and controlling, the other started to late. The boxers themselves know how its scored, its their job to not let the other boxer have easy rounds, and in this case its apparent that happened.
Just the way it works unfortunately, a tennis player could win more games than his opponent eg(7-6 7-6 0-6 0-6 7-6) and still get beat, but both men know how the scoring works. Basically the rules are the rules, both know what they sign up for
yeah i agree if fighter a wins 7 close rounds then gets a heavy beat down for 5 he still wins. i think more even rounds and more 10-8 rounds with no knockdowns would give a more accurate account of how a fight panned out.
well, i didn't catch the fight but basing on your explanation i don't think its that flawed. imo its your job as a boxer to not let the other guy score easy rounds, if he was doing what he was doing earlier and not getting KD he would have won that fight, its his fault that he didn't win. He shouldn't have let the other guy took those wins. I can assume that maybe he had stamina issues thats why he planned on starting late and being lazy on the early rounds, thats why a fight was schedule for 10, 12 is because you have to work on all that rounds. Part of the rules imo and i don't think its flawed because of that scenario. What was that guy doing on the first 5 rounds? - thats right losing and getting KD, the other guy however on the late rounds, he was not doing anything special as you said but he was still there doing something which is losing so its basically the same as what the other guy did early on.
Sorry only saw the first three rounds, then got tired as I had already watched UK fight card, followed by telefutura, ESPN & go fightlive.tv aswell !
