This was a massive FAILURE.. I think Danas plan was to tap into the boxing market and show the skills of mma fighters to a new legion of fans. Unfortunate ly for him, the card was lackluster and Toney looked terrible. Kudos to Couture for being a sportsman and a class act, but he should be a bit embarrased to have been involved in that farce.. From talking up Toneys heavyweight "titles" and claiming he was in "great shape" the night reeked of a sideshow atmosphere.
For a moment I thought this was a photo shoot from 'Big Boys in Boots'. Real men don't use wrestling they use Napalm.
What else could they say though? Toney was an out of shape fat slob and his previous belts were *******jack box toys?
You have to be a real ****** to place any importance on this fight. This fight just goes to show that UFC fans can be hoodwinked into buying any garbage on PPV. **** strength is the UFCs secret.
You are a moron. You completely didn't see what happened. -- Tricked - Toney used typical fight hype to "skip line" over a bunch of deserving MMA practitioners to secure a fight with a legend AND a large UFC payday. Boxing won't give the guy a shot for a reason. He is fat. -- Discontent - All MMA practitioners will start to wonder where they fit in Dana White's grand scheme now that two sideshows have bagged more cash than tons of legit fighters that Dana either disses or won't pay right (Fedor) -- Proved Something - It proved that a one dimensional fighter has no business in a multi-dimensional rule set. No more. No less. Pure wrestlers, BJJ, kick boxers, MT, etc... get owned too. If Toney was serious about MMA, training and getting decent matchmaking, he probably could have found someone to be the same way Kimbo did. So basically MMA and the UFC are still great and Boxing is too. Both sports should cross pollinate since grabbing average boxers could make for some interesting MMA strikers and elite strikers with weak ground game may make for some interesting Boxers. Also, the more affluent older audience of boxing will bring in some nice purses for MMA fighters.
If Judo Gene Lebell ever heard you trying to qualify this nonsense he'd choke you out until you lost control of your bowels and **** your pants. Clearly you have some deep seeded personal issues if you start thinking about gay sex everytime you hear the word "grappling", because for most normal people this isn't the case.
I am a Boxing die hard that does BJJ also and I always tell my grappling hater friends. What is better? Waking up from getting choked or getting controlled and saying the other guy was a B? Or getting choked and controlled and actually looking like one? They always change the subject.
exactly, james toney was the exact wrong boxer to represent the sport if you wanted a 'boxer v mma' fight. he is flat footed, and LAZY. he didn't train ****, you can tell by his weight and his inability to do ANYTHING from the back. let me know when a boxer in his prime actually takes a mma fight seriously and learns some ground skills, then there can be discussion. and also clue us in when the top fighters make millions every fight without the ridiculous 'dana gives them hundreds of thousands in the locker room' bull****. he doesn't.
I take it you let the Mercer vs Sylvia fight slip your mind?? Anyways, when are fans gonna stop comparing the two...Why cant you just appreciate the art of fighting period??? This was not a huge success for MMA just like it wasnt a let down for boxing.
