I just rewatched LaStarza vs Marciano II and it appeared that his strategy was rather similar to Holyfield's against Tyson: cover up and counter any attacks, stay off the ropes, move/wrestle him back in the clinches and of course use the odd jab here and there. Thoughts?
I'm not sure if you're trying to make a comparison with the intent of determining an outcome in a fantasy fight, but I'll say this. Lastarza was deemed as probably the best defensive fighter of his era, and rightfully so. He was a good counter puncher and very difficult to hit. An angered and frustrated Marciano battered away at Roland's arms in an effort to get inside, and resulted in Lastarza having surgery on both arms. Had Lastarza possesed the strength and power of Evander Holyfield, I have little or no doubt that he could fought Marciano off, and possibly beat him both times. His punches lacked sting however, and he was not the masterful boxer that Walcott was, therefore leaving the only option of fighting a defensive minded match..
Never thought about it that way, but I agree your points. Good obsersvation. It worked for 6 rounds, but he had an italian brickhouse hitting him anywhere and everywhere.....sometimes science alone cannot overcome that
Good Observation. I reckon that LaStarza lacked the strength to translate the tactic into a win. Otherwise it was a blueprint on how to convceivably beat Marciano.
Well i don't think LaStarza has the strength to keep Tyson off him but that was not my point. Just a stylistic comparison. I would be curious how LaStarza would've fared against the other top contenders of his era, however. His record was padded, but he looked very capable against Rocky.
" For the second Lastarza fight, the one with my title on the line,we knew he carried his left high, and allways brought it back high.I had to bring that hand down to get a shot at his head, so I practiced throwing right hands to the heart. Finally, around the tenth round, I got his arm down and I stopped him in the eleventh"Marciano.
Lastarza had an excellent record going into the Marciano fight 53-3 and he beat every man that beat him except Rocky, he went downhill after that but then again most of Marciano's opponents were never the same after fighting him. Lastarza had a built up record but he did fight quite a few good fighter on his way up and a close fight with Marciano was his record as padded as say George Foreman's...I dont think so....Roland was a good fighter his 1st fight against Marciano showed he was tough, getting off the floor and going 10 in a close one, the 2nd Marciano was somewhat disheartening for him, it was a fight that Roland took a lot of damage to the arms, chest, shoulders and head.....Walcoot,Lastarza,Charles,were not as strong 2nd time around with Marciano and I suspect a rematch with Moore as unnecessary as it was would have been a quicker victory for Marciano....Marciano had that effect on a man
