Papp was one of the greatest amateur fighters of all time, winning the olympic gold medal three times. he was so special, that the communist hungarian government allowed him to turn pro (boxing out of vienna, where he was popular). he went undefeated in 29 pro bouts (two draws), winning the euro title and became the number one contender for joey giardellos middleweight crown, but was ordered to retire by his government (cause suddenly they thought it was a bad idea for him to box proatsch), still holding the number one spot. Gustav Scholz may have been the greatest german fighter of all time. he had 96 pro bouts............losing only two. one of his losses was a controversial decision to french standout charles humez in paris.........he avenged it in savage fashion a few months later, stopping humez in 12 for the european belt. the other loss came by close decision vs harold johnson, one of the greatest lightheavyweights of all time. scholz was really only a middleweight (actually, he started out as a welterweight), but he just couldnt get a shot at the title, cause in those days, german boxing did not have the financial capabilities it has today. what both have in common: very good records, but not against the highest level of comp. both were european middleweight champs and never lost the belt. both hold easy ko wins over german standout peter mueller (papp winning by ko three times, scholz winning twice by ko.) however, papp was a much shorter (only 5´5) but very fiery/ferocious fighter. scholz was about 5´11. he was a southpaw and more of a cool/calculating counterpuncher. both had serious ko capabilities. so who wins????
