Hey whats up guys. Im 29 now and want to start getting into boxing agian, the last time was when i was 17. My question is basicly did any of you start late in the game, and did your height make a big difference. Im about 5'7 185 a little on the short side but pretty well built. I dont have a very far reach so I guess I would have to train to become an inside fighter. I have pretty quick hands and very powerful punch, the only thing is I dont know how well I can take a hit becasue basicly I never got hit hard enough to find out. I use to train in aikido for years so my evasion is pretty good. So any imput on what I can do to overcome some of those disadvantages would be great. As of now I have a 70lb heavy bag and a speed bag, plus I go to the gym abot 5 times a week.
It amazes me how many posters come on here, asking us if they're "good enough" or got a good enough built to go to the boxing gym, there's a simple answer: YES. There's the Rocky Marciano's, there's the Wladimir Klitschko's, and there's the Muhammad Ali's.. it won't be the deciding factor what build you have, if you have Rocky's mental toughness, you will make it out there no matter what. Instead, you should give us the vital information, and that is: Where do you want to go with your boxing career (Amatuer, pro) Or maybe it is because you want to get in shape? And for that age question, there's a lot of fighters that start in there late 20's and still have a good amatuer/professional career.. just look at Anthony Thompson right now @ heavyweight. Some people keep boxing till they are in their late 40s or early 50s... so you shouldn't worry about being 29 years old, you're still very much in your prime years. So here's my answer: Go to the gym, don't expect to be the best boxer that ever lived, put up personal goals along the way, you will do good if your heart is in it. :good
Ok fair enough! I wasnt really asking if I was good enough with my build was more a less seeing how many similar people with my build and age just starting out thats all. You answered my question pretty much so thanks. So my plan of action is to pretty much workout wich is easy because Im also a personal trainer so no problems there. As for what to do boxing wise I am going to join a boxing gym. Just like to see what real people have to say about them boxing and what they did to help them, even though everyones body is different and what works for one dosnt work for the next but still good to know. As far as what I want out of boxing? One its a great way to get in the best shape of your life. I like the sport and like to fight so fighting amature is deff in the plans, as for going pro just have to take baby steps and see what happens. Thanks for the quick response.
Im 20 and just got into it, i went to the boxing gym last year and had to leave to go traveling ( which im still doing now) im back in march and wil be re -joining first week im back jet lag or no lol, anyway im probably in better shape than most of the other begginers even some of them that have been there a while however im setting realistic goals , i want to learn how to fight and the boxing skills to a competent - decent level , and then consider amature fights. I know im not going to be champion of the world but im doing this for me , no one else and im happy just having it as a hobby.:good
I just started about a year ago when I was 18. If you're 29 already, you probably don't have a shot at becoming the next floyd mayweather, but the good thing about boxing is that your skill doesn't really matter in the sense that it is more of a personal sport, where you're mostly competing against yourself. Your skill or your build might not be great, but there are always others at your skill level that you can spar with.
