Are there any late starters here who also fight now?

Like 25 or 28 years olds?

I know a 24 year old guy who recently started fighting, but someone told 28 is too old.

    Your thoughts and experiences please.

34 is too old because they can't fight in the amateur ranks, but there are masters competitions too.

mate I worry about this, its hard for me to go to my gym now because theyve moved times and im 21 and kept worrying, but now Im to the point where I just think, I love boxing, and enjoy doing it, thats all that matters. Ive been told at a gym before there is not much point now because Im too old, but its something I love, I dont care that I wont be a professional, I do it for the love of it, I think you should concentrate on doing it for the love of the sport and not some crazy aspiration to be a pro. If you strive really hard its possible of course, and all Ill say is dont let anyone tell you to stop.

Why do people worry about age so much? If you want to box just box for ****s sake.

I started 23 and I box... Not a fight yet, but I asked my coach if he would help me get in the amateurs this year.

He said he would do his best. Go for it man. :good

Exactly, just start and see what happens, if you like it keep doing it, if you don't then go do something else.

depends on what's your goal, if you are thinking of going pro or fighting high level amateur it'll be hard unless you are in the higher weights but you can start any time just for fun or as a hobby

although must gyms dont take older boxers or dont pay too much attention to them and getting amateur fights is hard because must boxers your age have over 30 to 70 fights so it'll be hard to find somebody to debut against

Thanks for the all the replies, I have been training for almost a year now, I believe I have decent technique and I do my cardio/conditioning workouts everyday.

But nowadays I am getting the itch to fight.... don't want to become a pro though.

Nver had my first boxing fight until I was 27. I will be 31 next month. Had my first thai boxing fight at 25. I plan on fighting until I need to retire from the amateurs and then turn pro for a few fights at 34ish

Just started this year, and I am 24 years old. I will probably do it until the age of 34 which is my last year of amateur eligibility.

Exactly. It's a sport, if you want to compete then compete. People act like it's only worth starting boxing if you're going to be a world champ. If you enjoy the sport do it and have fun, amateur boxing is relatively safe as there's no real chance of any crippling injuries like in footy or rugby.
Unless you're 33 years old and can only compete for one more year then there's nothing to worry about when it comes to age. By that age anyway I'd hope you'd have realised it's just a sport and it's not that important in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for the replies, I have never thought of fighting, i just wanted to learn the art of boxing and keep on improving but its just recently I was just thinking what if I can probably get one or two fights in me...

I will speak to the coach about it...last time he said if i don't have it in me, he won't train me and waste his time...which makes sense.
