If we're talking about physiques being highly suspicious, Shannon Briggs is the one that raises most alarm bells. His proportions appear 'roid-assisted to my eyes. Guys like AJ are inconclusive.
My last post here to our newcomer PED Sherlock Holmes: The FFMI (fat free mass index) of Mr. Universe winners from the pre-steroid winners have been well studied. It's been about 25.5/25.7 at the max. Most natural athletes peter out around the 25 area. Prime Arnold, Dorian Yates, Jay Cutler, Ron Coleman score around 33-37. Just for some perspective. Here's an FFMI background and a calculator so you can educated yourself: https://www.strongerbyscience.com/your-drug-free-muscle-and-strength-potential-part-1/ I punched in AJ's most recent stats and using 9% bodyfat I get an FFMI 25.1. Just a tad below the last (natural) Mr. Universes. And just on the upper limit of being 100% natural. Does that prove AJ is 100% drug free? No, of course not. He could be juiced up to this eyeballs. But the beginner mistake is to look at swollen muscles full of vascularity and scream PEDs! That's just very dumb and simplistic. Science says: To achieve AJ's physical look (not talking about his boxing ability) no steroids are needed since his FFMI is around 25. And that's an undisputable fact, period.
It can be achieved if this is your only goal, however if you goal is to be an elite boxer it's impossible to achieve that kind of physique clean. Not only that a boxer has to do a lot of exercises that don't have much impact on muscle or actually reduce muscle mass (cardio), boxing causes wear and tear to your body and forces you to limit or reduce the intensity of your training. For example personally I couldn't have a serious work out with weights since January. In February and March I focused on heavy sparring and I wanted to be a bit leaner and quicker. Then after intense boxing training in those months I got slight pain in my left shoulder and I couldn't work out with weights properly. Then I got pain in my wrist after another sparring and I can't even do push ups at the moment. If I were only lifting weights these injuries wouldn't happen and I would have a lot more muscle mass and look much more jacked. Your hands and shoulders get really battered in boxing, not to mention the problems with elbows, wrists, lower back... Which forces you to reduce the progress when working out with weights.
Really? So he has roughly the same FFMI as some the world's greatest natural bodybuilders and that doesn't ring any alarms in your head? Just how stupid are you? AJ is not a bodybuilder. If he were a competing bodybuilder this would be a reasonable evidence he's natural, but he's a boxer who just happens to match the world's greatest bodybuilders? Without even trying exclusively for size? Again. Just how stupid are you?
Being taller/bigger does give you powers to generate faster obviously. A larger organism replenishes itself on a larger scale. The muscle fibre is longer to start with. The larger body requires more fuel and synthesises more protein. No one has ever disputed this ... until you. Get a 5' man and a 6' man (both skinny untrained) and put them on a weights program and a high calorie/high protein bulking diet. The bigger man should be able to eat more and his longer muscles will weigh more. If the two men's muscle fibres increase in thickness at the same rate, the longer one is increasing more in mass due to extra length. This is so simple and common sense I'm not sure if you're being serious when questioning it.
I think one factor you probably underestimate is the genetic natural propensities of these elite athletes. Guys like Anthony Joshua respond uncommonly well to training stimuli, and recover extremely well. That's not all down to drugs. They are special. Most of us here, even some of the more gifted athletically or us, probably shouldn't compare ourselves to them. They are ELITE, phenomenal individuals. The likes of AJ don't walk into every gym every day, he's in a very tiny fraction of percentile genetically.
Sports science. Results can be achieved with dedication, the right nutrition and legal supplements along with world class trainers and facilities. It's no surprise given the resources these elite athletes have.
AJ has professional health and nutrition specialists around him, its perfectly possible to look how he does without steroids. this guys use natural and perfectly legal ways to achieve what they do. they live the life, they dont cheat! its called dedication not medication
I agree that Joshua is at the limit. I don't think he's quite as lean at 250 though. He didn't look ultra-lean to me. And believe he's done a fair bit of bodybuilding and may naturally maintain that with a minimal weight program. For all we know he does bodybuilding training the whole time and then lays off it only for his fight training camps. That wouldn't surprise me a bit. I believe he's on the juice but arguments about him weighing more than Arnold don't really help that case.
You are simplifying the system way, way too much. And are you taking it as a given they'll increase in thickness at the same rate? Because my claim is the opposite of that. I want you to explain to me right now what limits the rate of muscle growth. You know what the answer is? We don't know. And it could easily be independent of fiber length. You can look at non-human animals, eg, chimpanzees, and see how readily they gain muscle. I would say this indicates there are much more important factors than fiber length. Anecdotally (which means very little), I have heard no reports of different rates of muscle acquisition dependent on stature and I doubt the difference can be that much.
He likely has drugs specialists around him too though. Let's be realistic. PEDs are part of the life.
I don't know. But it seems like common sense. At 6'3 I went from 175 pounds and went to 215 pounds, fairly lean, naturally. That's 40 pounds. It probably took 2-3 years but the first 20 pounds didn't take long. I'm sure a guy 5'3 and 100 pounds would find it harder to getting to 140.
As someone who's juiced myself and been around those that weight train with and without PEDs I would say AJ is very much on the border of what's possible naturally and what isn't. If I had to bet I would say he probably has/is juicing. But who cares? This doesn't detract from anything he's achieved. Fury tested positive in 2015 before the Wlad fight. Vitali was caught as an amateur and I would bet Wlad has juiced too. Povetkin ,Whyte among others caught in last few years.... It's just part and parcel of the game. They just need to make sure their drug regimes are sophisticated enough to avoid detection.
