How does the promotion and purse bid system work. The way I understood the politics and promotions was that a fighter was signed to the promoter, not the event is picked up by a promoter. I have never really looked into the 'ugly' side of boxing so if someone could let me know.

 

I wouldn't worry about it. That fight never happens in a million years.

 

OK, firstly there are two types of title fights. Voluntary defences (e.g. Khan v McCloskey) where the promoters agree a deal between themselves for the fight-whose show it goes on, how much each boxer gets paid, purse and tv splits etc. So Matchroom would have been happy to give up the majority in order to have McCloskey actually involved.

Then there are mandatory fights (e.g. Groves v DeGale). In this case, if a deal can't be reached between the two parties it goes to purse bids. Then anyone who is interested in staging the fight is invited to put in a 'blind' bid. Highest bid wins, but obviously you don't know how much the other promoters have bid.
