Gavilan's chin cancels this out. Gavilan is the better boxer IMO. Doesn't have super-fast feet but enough smarts to box Trinidad to a decision. Over 15 he might well stop him, Gavilan is an underrated hitter in my book and a lot of the sustained beatings he dished out would have forced a stoppage in the 'modern era' (i.e Tito's time) Tito really could bang and had the chin to crack iron chins (Campas for example) but not Gavilan's. Speaking of Campas WTF is that 'two inch punch' all about in the 2nd round against Tito???? I know Tito was a bit vulnerable at the weight but that was ridiculous :rofl
Campas was a pretty solid short range hooker. Speaking of short punches, How about that Short left Hook by Foster which nailed Dick Tiger
No, it's different, have you seen it? I mean it's not even a hook.......it's like a prod if that makes sense?
Gavilan would outbox Tito comfortably IMO. The man was an excellent boxer and my guess is even though he had a cast iron jaw he would be respectful of Felix`s power and fight off the backfoot behind his jab and catch the judges eyes with some flashy and furious flurrys towards the end of the rounds and win a clear decision something along the lines of 9-6 or 8-6-1 in rounds on the cards.
Even if Gavilan were to knock out Tito, it would be late in the fight and not by the middle rounds, no way. Tito got battered and hammered by a big middleweight in Hopkins for twelve rounds before succumbing, and while Hop isn`t known as a puncher the man doesn`t exactly have pillows in his fists either and he definately hits harder than Gavilan. I can see Gavilan forcing a stoppage on a tired and defenseless Trinidad late in the bout, but I have a hard time seeing him flat out knocking Tito out, Gavilan just didn`t have that kind of power.
Gav too eek it out...Tito in puncher mode (is there any other) will give him something to think about but he will eventually find his rhythm and hold out a late charge from Tito to take a hard fought but clear cut decision. I dont see Felix being an easy night for any welter.
Gavilan wins a comfortable 15 round decision...The Hawk's chin would hold up well..and he would outfight, outbox and out everything poor Tito.
Good call RB..and I don't even think Gavvy would have even tried to knock him out...he would just be too much for Tito all night long.
Gavilan by wide decision. A stylist who knows every trick in the book and can take a solid punch equals a bad night for Tito.
I never did think much of Gavilan as a technician. He was more than adequate of course, but not an exceptional talent in that area. He was a solid ring general, able to pace a fight however he wanted to, but his real prowess was physical; a truly iron jaw, mountainous endurance and very quick hands. In between periods of boxing, Gavilan would be all over Trinidad like a rash from the moment he is dragged down into an exchange; Gavilan would take Trinidad's punches and retaliate with triple volume and intensity. Trinidad would be battered and worn out by the tenth, unable to continue.
