The Final two bouts of the first round are here in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The first bout has Puerto Rican legend Carlos Ortiz up against tough strong man Yori Boy Campas. Carlos comes out boxing and trying to test Campas' strength in a couple of exchanges. Yori Boy is finding success with short punches inside. Ortiz moves around in the mid rounds & stays out of harms way. Campas is trying to force the action, but is catching alot of leather. In the later rounds Ortiz is continuing to move & box, continually beating Campas to the punch. CARLOS ORTIZ .15 DEC. YORI BOY CAMPAS The main event pits two of the favorite's of the tournament. Panama's Roberto Duran against Cuba's Luis Rodriguez. Rodriguez comes out fast & establishes his jab. Duran takes a couple of rounds to figure out his opponent. then starts to apply pressure, straight rights are landing for Duran, which opens the door to the inside. But as Duran fights on the inside he is suprised by Luis' strength & speedy combinations. In the later stages Duran is still trying to rumble on the inside. Rodriguez meets this challenge, by fighting on the inside, then escaping behind the jab. In the final rounds, Duran is attacking wildly. He lands hard punches, but Rodriguez is not being hurt. Rodriguez boxes smartly & avoids most of Duran's rushes. LUIS RODRIGUEZ . 15 SPLIT DECISION. ROBERTO DURAN
That's two very very good write ups there LC. Can we say that Duran IS catching Rodriguez though at the end but LMR's lead serves him well on the cards? Please?! I voted for Rodriguez btw.
Nar i'm never biased, even when watchin hometown fighters. I trevaelled to MSG to watch Ortiz-Campas, was a great trip. Ortiz just punished his misgivings as a fighter. I'd likely only be biased when watching Tyson. Oh and i always cheer when Ricky Hatton hits the deck.
Nar, you mis read, San Juan was the original venue, the ****ing mob had it moved. (don't be a smart ass and tell me the mob weren't controlling boxing in the 70's and 80's!). Tyson-Hatton, that's the dream! Seriously though, i wouldn't cheer if Hatton got seriously hurt, but provided he will be okay i'd watch him getting ko'd all day.
Yes, Rodriguez too strong on the inside & he built an early lead. I was suprised most people picked the upset in this one.
Yeah, but slow. Highly doubtful Ortiz would trade power shots with this bull. Plus he has the ability to outbox Campas & keep out of harms way. Well... theroretically. Then again Campas IS very strong...
