Lawler says he stuck to the game plan?!?!!?

I thnk the game plan was the overhand right. Knowing that his opponent drops the right hand during exchanges and during his offense I think Robbie was looking for the money shot especially given the fact his knee was ****ed up. He stuck to believing a "W" was only one over right or right hook away....and it turned out to be true. Sure Robbie didn't really look to see his shot land, but his instinct told his body to react and respond to his opponent opening up...and Robbies' response was in form of a right hand that paid dividends. It was a great come from behind victory. It definitly DID NOT all go as planned but it goes to show you what a good game plan and a cool, calm composed demanor can do with the right timing.

 

It's not like he didn't know the general area that Manhoef was in; his eyes weren't closed and he could at least see his torso or possibly even his face, we don't know.

He got lucky that Manhoef made a mistake, but he was counting on it.

No question Manhoef looked like winning that fight and getting the **** beat out of him for 4 minutes was not Lawlers plan. Just as clearly though, Lawler made a decision that he was going to keep his hands up at all costs, even if it meant getting hit to the body and the kicked shitless. I think he clearly underestimated how badly he Manhoef was going to work him over at first, but the general idea of "wait for the Manhoef blitz and counter."

So what is lucky and what isn't? His power and toughness were not luck, Manhoef giving him the perfect shot was quite lucky, but he was pretty much banking on that as his best chance to win the fight.

Manhoef could have pretty clearly won that fight if he had more respect for Robbie's power, which is pretty well documented; nobody is going to argue that Lawler has the same striking tools. Lawler does deserve credit though for not panicking and just swinging and going into "Robbie smash" mode like he would have in his earlier career; he kept waiting and the shot presented itself.

 

Plan or no plan. everybody has a plan until they get hit/hurt. id say he had a plan of winning. HE WON. HE KNOCKED MELVIN INTO COMA LAND. END OF STORY. GOOD NIGHT SWEET PRINCE.
